This Heritage Statement is to support applications for planning permission and listed building consent to undertake the following proposed developments on Southport Pier:
Demolition of two glazed shelters and their replacement with new food and beverage and retail kiosks.
Extension and alterations to the Pier end pavilion.
Construction of two staircases to link the Pier deck and beach.
Southport Pier is today the oldest iron pier in the country, and the second longest at 3,648ft.
The history of Southport Pier and its development is well-documented with several
references published in history books and on-line.
Since its restoration, Southport Pier has remained a busy and popular attraction. Sefton Council wishes to further expand the Pier’s offer and incorporate additional concessions and attractions to further enhance the Pier’s appeal and ensure its long-term sustainability.
The following points summarise how the proposed development has been informed by the Heritage Assessment:
The two shelters were constructed in 1999 – 2000 and are therefore not original
historic structures, although they do take reference from an earlier Victorian shelter
which was demolished during the 1950’s. Therefore, there is flexibility to create a
contemporary use in this location.
The proposed shelter / kiosks are a well-informed traditional design using robust
traditional materials we know are suitable in this exposed coastal location.
The landward kiosk will include external seating on the east and west elevations, the seaward kiosk structure will include external seating on three sides. This continues the original historic function of these structures.
The alterations to the Pier end Pavilion seek to improve the permeability of this
structure and capture even wider views along the coastline, which was its original
Shed KM design intention. The existing solid aluminium-clad east and west
elevations have not weathered well, whereas the original glazing remains crisp and
contemporary and we wish to extend this aesthetic right around the Pavilion building.
The two proposed new staircases will improve footfall and promote linkage between the Pier and the beach and will re-introduce an original design concept whichsurvived to the 1920’s. We have made the staircase design as minimal as
structurally possible to reduce any over-burdening effect on the Pier when viewed
closely and from afar.
The spatial qualities of the Pier, especially the spacious coastal character and far reaching views along the Lancashire coast from the elevated Pier deck will not be
compromised by this development.
The form and profile of the Pier structure when viewed from key viewpoints along
Southport Marine Drive and the Coastal Road will not be harmed by these proposals.

Fine, all for improvement and getting the the best out of any attraction etc, but...... are they going to put better, continual security on, or in fact some security even?
If they aren't i'm afraid with the ever growing bands of knobheads who have wrecked what's there now, look at Kings Gardens etc, the same will happen to this as well.

Should look good if it goes ahead, but pleasebudget forsome. Form of security to avoid these idiots who go around destroying what good is done in the town. Hope that access from the beach can't be made at night. We live in hope.

I wonder if that means it will be open longer, especially in the summer months.

I thought it was 1,112 yards long that would be 3,336 ' long and not 3,648 unless they have extended it since I was on the team that painted it in the eighties. And there used to be sign at the entrance saying it was 1,112 ' long (after the fire that was years ago ).

Think it was 1211 yards in the 80's, at least that's what Fred told me (boss at the time). The revamped one I was told is 1066 metres or 1154 yards long so a bit shorter.
