Unbelievably Sefton Council has taken the decision to not to open Southport market on Christmas Eve.

In a short letter addressed to all traders from the Market Management the Council said

"After conducting a survey of traders regarding opening on Christmas Eve and much deliberation of the operations the decision has been taken by the heads of department to close the building on this day.

All other days will remain the same and trading hours will be posted on the main doors.

why would a butcher and greengrocer agree not to open on what is probable their busiest day of the year? #madness

Who will notice, anyway. There are so few customers in there I'm amazed it is still open.

Move the market to the old BHS building.

Will they be closing the recently purchased New Strand shopping centre in Bootle as well?

The Council don't run the Strand.

There will be no late night shopping at the Strand this year.

The same company that refurbished Southport Market also did the historic Accrington Market Hall at a fraction of the price. How much money (that hiked up the capital cost and resulted in less attractive rents) was wasted on the new edifice down the Market Street side, that no-one coming from Chapel Street and Lord Street sees?

Accrington, despite having less than half the population of Southport, is doing well. Southport isn't.

The difference? Could it be the local authority?

bet the outsiders log cabins will still be allowed open an running.but all said most traders this year arnt expecting even normal footfall or sales, its certainly living up to be spookport, for most this year.so add in the bus strikes and possible rail strikes, xmas eve trade wont make much of a dent,to the state of the decline!but it is a bit of a slap in the face of the market traders, retaliation at their protestations to he council would probably be more at the root of this!
