Damien Moore, the Member of Parliament for Southport, has today welcomed plans for a new discount railcard, which will ‘potentially save residents hundreds of pounds’.
His support follows the Chancellors announcement ahead of Wednesday's budget.
The proposals include a new discount rail card for 26-30 year olds, which will mean passengers receive 33% off rail fairs and will help to keep the cost of travel down for 4.5 million people.
Under existing legislation, those who are aged 26-30 are classed as an adult and are not eligible for a discount.
Commenting on the proposals, Damien said:
“Today’s welcomed announcement will mean many residents living in Southport will save 33% of their rail fairs, enabling them to keep more of their own money.”
“The cheapest price of a return ticket to Manchester is £16.50* and £6.60* to Liverpool, which means if you’re a regular commuter for work you could save £5.44 and £2.17 on your rail fair respectively, potentially saving hundreds of pounds throughout the year."
“The new railcard will also be great for our tourist economy as it will encourage those who ordinarily don’t visit the town to make the journey, but we must do more to showcase Southport’s potential and attract visitors in.”

*Figures are based upon the cheapest open return fair to both destinations on 21st November 2017.

What is so special about the 26-30 year olds?
Do you automatically get paid more when you are 31 and over?

How about getting a grip on rail fares? rather than throwing even more tax payers money into subsidising the train operators.

Will it really be valid for commuter fares?
Those prices may be the cheapest commuter fares but, are not the cheapest fares.
Will it be valid for the Merseyrail Day Ranger ticket that costs £5:10, can be used to travel to Chester and is available daily after 9:30 a.m. and all weekend?

No No No
The existing 18 -25 doesn't cover those fares and before 10-00am is subject to a minimum £12 fare.
