My weekly article on my activity in Parliament.
This week during questions to the department for Health & Social Care, I asked the Minister of State for Health about waste in the NHS. The Government is striving to recycle more hospital equipment such as crutches, zimmer frames and wheelchairs. I asked the Minister how his department is encouraging hospitals like Southport Hospital, to run recycling programmes to further cut waste in the NHS. It is important that the NHS provides world class healthcare at a fair cost to tax payers. I am glad that the Minister agreed with me that Recycling schemes will reduce waste and cost.
I had several meetings with Minister’s this week to ensure that Southport is well represented in Government. I met with the Rail Minister, Jo Johnson MP to discuss progress on restoring the Southport-Manchester Piccadilly rail service. I also met with the Minister for Policing, Nick Hurd MP to discuss Merseyside Police, the Police Funding Settlement for 2019/20 and the Spending Review. I am encouraged that Merseyside Police will receive the support it needs from Government. Lastly, I met with the Minister for Local Government, Rishi Sunak MP, to discuss the future of local government and the relationship between Southport and Sefton Council.
This week I was pleased to drop in to Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. I heard from people living with cancer and what life was like after treatment. I also met with Macmillan professionals to learn more about their experiences of cancer care in the NHS.
We owe so much to our senior citizens. I was happy to host a senior’s fair for them in Southport recently. Following this, I met with AgeUK to discuss social care for the elderly in Southport and in the UK.
I also attended the launch of the organ donation toolkit. While the number of organ donors is up, more than 400 people still died last year waiting for a transplant, and more remains to be done to increase the availability of organs for transplant even further. Amazingly, despite 82 per cent of people willing to donate their organs and tissue after they have died, just 38 per cent of the population have chosen to opt-in on the Organ Donor Register. I was pleased to hear the positive steps being taken to increase the number of organ donors further.
I attended my usual meetings with the Science & Technology and Petitions Committees.
