A fantastic display from Southport saw them overcome Boreham Wood 2-0 and progress into the second round of the FA Cup.

Dean Winnard and Jason Gilchrist scored as Southport reached the FA Cup second round for the second time in three seasons with a 2-0 win over Boreham Wood.

Goals in either half from Winnard and Gilchrist meant the National League North strugglers go into Monday's draw at the expense of Luke Garrard's fifth-tier side.

The hosts dominated the opening exchanges, with Gilchrist heading just over from Bradley Bauress' cross after two minutes.

Dion Charles then threatened for Liam Watson's side on 18 minutes but he dragged his effort wide.

Southport finally made the breakthrough on the half-hour mark, with Winnard powering home a header from Jack Sampson's corner.

The home side almost extended their lead on the stroke of half-time, Gilchrist flashing a strike wide from 25 yards.

The Yellows picked up where they left off after the break and Bauress was inches away from scoring with a low drive on 50 minutes.

Boreham Wood did look to rally in the second half, Gozie Ugwu creating their best opening, but his curling effort drifted wide on 56 minutes.

Southport sealed their passage into the next round on 70 minutes as Gilchrist rose highest to head home Bauress' deep free-kick.

Skinners has crawled back under his/her stone, not to be heard of again until the unbeaten run comes to an end.
