Sefton Council will permit 'Fracking' applications across the communities
of the Borough as long as it is *"satisfied as to the safety and regulation
of the processes and the robustness of the mechanisms to mitigate short and
long-term impacts"* following a motion moved last night by Council Labour
    Leader Ian Maher.

In what Councillor Maher described as a 'carefully-worded motion', the
council voted that it expects *"that any adverse risks relating to
community, environmental and health risks would be fully-addressed should
any proposals be submitted for planning consent and that any tangible
economic and community benefits will be fully-evidenced to the Council's
    satisfaction."*

As Liberal Democrat Councillor Simon Shaw pointed out, the 'careful
wording' of the motion made completely-meaningless any pretence that the
Sefton Labour Group was against Fracking in any meaningful way. Nor would
the motion when passed commit the Council to do anything at all which
opposed Fracking. This was confirmed when the Labour group voted AGAINST a
call from Maghull Independent councillor Matt Gannon. for the Council to
support a national moratorium on Fracking and for the council to express
concern about *"possible significant adverse impacts from shale gas
exploration and exploitation including water contamination and air
pollution."*. This amendment was supported by Lib Dem and Independent
councillors present but voted down by Labour and Conservatives.

The Labour Party has been thrown into turmoil in Sefton Borough over the
past three years by the loss of increasing numbers of Council seats to
independent environmentalist councillors in Formby, Maghull and Lydiate.
These independent environmentalists have opposed Labour's policy of
building on the Green Belt and are also strongly-opposed to 'Fracking'.
Should this trend continue, Labour would lose control of Sefton Council.

Many councillors left the debating chamber at the start of discussion.
Members of all four political groups who served on the Planning Committee
absented themselves in order that there could be no allegation that they
had pre-judged the issue if any application to commence fracking on any
site in the Borough comes up.

Properties are bound to be destabilised following Fracking beneath them just as mining has done in the past. Other Councils have voted not to give permission to Frack, as to be expected Sefton Council run by Labour are only thinking about how much money they can make out of the situation. But will they and the companies involved be prepared to compensate affected homes and businesses.

The case for or against Fracking is not proven either way. Seems Sefton may have inadvertently got something right for once despite their attempt at subterfuge on their press announcement!
Frankly why we're fracking at all is beyond me when there's
1/ enough gas to meet 20% of the UK's needs for at least 50 years in Liverpool Bay
2/ From Q3 2017 both Australia and the USA will start to export their own Fracked Gas in potentially massive volumes!
3/ The price of Gas is set to reduce by as much as 33% with the arrival of vast quantities of Aus and US gas to the global market thus undermining the business case for UK Fracking..... We should all see this reflected in our household bills!

So a Labour council states that if sufficient evidence is provided to show that the operation is safe and will have no negative impact on the environment. Then they might well allow it comes in for criticism.

From that I take it the local Lib Dems would never allow fracking even if there was overwhelming evidence that it would have no adverse impact. There's forward thinking by our local councillors. "Never mind the evidence. We know better"

But it will be imported, The gas under the UK will our own and therefore reduce our balance of payments. How many people though who are demanding we stop, use gas to cook and heat their homes? Will they disconnect their homes from the gas electric (Gas powered power stations) and water (Electric from power stations) I doubt it.

No doubt though we can look forward to the usual Rent A Demo mobs descending on the sites and staying there 24/7. I often wonder though where these people get their money from? Indeed I wonder if DWP wonder how many of these people are claiming Job Seekers Allowance? If so how can you claim Job Seekers and spend time you are supposed to be seeking work in a protest camp.

Like we don't import circa 65% of our needs now?!? We live in a global market and we're a small island with limited resources, don't understand your point at all.....
The business case for Fracked gas in the U.K. will not exist in 12-18 months that is crystal clear isn't it Greywolf?

  9. ecclefechan says:15/07/2016 08:24 PM
Southport's MP John Pugh, while he was propping up a Tory government, last year voted for the Infrastructure Bill that allows unlimited fracking under private property, ie your house and mine. Just saying.

So because we import 65% of everything now, that justifies importing something we already have. Yes, that's very crystal clear. And maybe it will not exist in 12-18 (Or perhaps it will) months, but what about in 2/4/10 years? And what happens if the EU ****** off Russia and they turn off the tap on the gas that flows eastward. No doubt you will be one of the first screaming why doesn't the government, Blue Red or yellow do something.

Except that it doesn't do that.

There seems to be even less point to this "top news story" than before, especially now that the author has removed "dishonest", "small print" and "condemned".....could one think the original article was "dishonest" or at least disingenuous?

I would have thought the caveats of if proven to be safe etc doesn't make this seem as reckless but I guess you can't beat pot shots between the local politicians.

For God's sake just look to the USA and see what a mess Fracking has created! Health issues, dirty water and infrastructure problems! Why can't we learn from other's mistakes rather than our own? The reason for fracking is NOT for jobs or lower fuel bills! It IS to make rich people richer! Yet another bad mistake by Sefton Council!

Greywolf we've still got a 250 year supply of Coal under the UK why aren't we still mining it? Because it's so cheap to buy in the global market at £20 / ton there's no financial business case for mining it in the UK at a cost of £22 / ton. As there's no margin for the sale of British coal nobody has bothered to invest in research on carbon capture if we burn it in our power stations. Fracked gas is in the UK is in the same position it's cheaper to but someone else's than extract are own......

I'm quite certain that what you say makes sense to you. It's just that it doesn't to the rest of us.

"... especially now that the author has removed "dishonest", "small print" and "condemned"....." - what on earth are you going on about? Have you removed some of your brain cells?
