Sefton Council is getting even tougher on flytippers who sadly dump their waste across the borough.

For the first time, Sefton Council can now issue fixed penalty notices of £400 to people caught fly-tipping.

New Government legislation allows local authorities the ability to set the amount for a fixed penalty notice for fly-tipping.

It is estimated during the 2015/16 financial year, Sefton Council spent almost £400K in relation to the clearance, disposal and enforcement of flytipping offences.

To raise awareness of the new fines, digital ad vans will be out and about in the borough at flytipping hotspots warning people that dumping goods is illegal. Posters and banners will also be springing up at areas known for flytipping across Sefton highlighting the new fixed penalty fines.

Cllr Paulette Lappin, Cabinet Member Regulatory, Compliance and Corporate Services, said: "We have always taken a tough stance on flytipping and this change now allows us to punish the culprits with a hefty fine. Hopefully it will make people think twice about just dumping their waste wherever they want.

"Flytipping is not only unsightly and anti-social, but it can also be a serious risk to people’s health and can cause considerable damage to the environment.

"We will always investigate reports of flytipping within Sefton and prosecute offenders when we can and hope the fixed penalty notices of £400 will act as a real deterrent.

"Please dispose of your waste in the proper fashion and make Sefton a cleaner and greener place to live, work and visit."

If any residents have any concerns regarding flytipping or wish to report an offence, they should contact us on 0345 140 0845 or report it via our fly tipping page.

"Sefton gets tough on fly-tipping".. By hiring an Ad van? Geeeez!

Unless the vans are filled with Police officers and fitted with high quality CCV cameras etc they're never going to catch anybody. People often dump stuff in areas that are less regularly frequented and those that do it are not going to stop because a van in a lay-by somewhere has an advert on it.

And unless you are a bunch of travelers, then we'll simply ignore you making a mess, then send a team in after you've gone, to clean up your ****. (among other things.)

The people of Southport should welcome this new initiative with open arms. Councillor Dawson was quoted as saying that there aren't different rules for different classes, so by the time the litter wardens, the parking attendants and the new fly tipping teams have descended on the illegal traveller camps and issued all their fixed penalties, there should be more than enough in the coffers to subside a council tax reduction for all.
In one visit by all those agencies, there should be a sum in excess of £500 collected from each of the travellers every day, should they descend on one of the public car parks again. Good news huh?

Surely you aren't doubting what I've said.

As shown with the litter wardens, they'll pick on the elderly for dropping a fag end, but ignore the big yob who throws one at their feet while they are writing out the ticket. Or they'll simply leave town when the likes of the Orange Lodge arrive. The parking wardens will book a disabled driver whos badge is a day out of date, but ignore a swarm of travelers vehicles dumped on bus stops double yellow lines and taxi ranks when they arrive mob handed for a wedding at the town hall. Time our councilors made sure that all laws and by laws, apply to everybody. That could, (silly suggestion) also apply to those mothers and nanny's who park their top of the range vehicles on the yellow lines outside the private schools daily in Crosby.

I just don't get this crap council we have running our town, they haven't a clue , they waste our money , they pay councillors small fortunes in expenses , they hire a van to tell the public that fly tipping won't be tolerated, it's like a bloody good sitcom .

But people (or should that be 'sheeple'?) keep voting for the same councillors who are only interested in self-publicity.

Plus no-one has mention the cost the council charge for taking rubbish away or large items, I live in a block of flats and no-one wants to pay , why should I pay for someone elses rubbish to be taken away, so now the bin room is full of tvs, old computers mirrors etc.............oh and a few rats

As with all laws, people will take advantage in any laxity of enforcement. I doubt that this sudden 'purge' will be sustained.
