I’ve made the decision to stand as an independent parliamentary candidate in Southport. For the last 7 years we’ve been represented by someone who got lucky when the Lib Dem vote collapsed. The current MP doesn’t care about the town, it’s a stepping stone to some ministerial position so he can feather his nest. I know I can do better.

I was born here, at Christiana Hartley and grew up on Hart St. I’ve always lived in this town. I spent 16 years driving buses at the local depot, it was in my time as a bus driver I was politicised. Getting more involved with the trade union standing as a shop steward and seeing the rapid decline of the services provided and the other brutal aspects of austerity. My Grandmother Kath Halsall emigrated here from Ireland to work in the NHS. I love this town that I’ve lived and worked in for so long. It deserves better than it’s getting now

My biggest three priorities for the town would be

• To deliver a thriving economy so people can work doing high skilled jobs here without having to move away after education.
• Fight relentless to protect and return our NHS to the fully publicly funded jewel in the crown of this country. The men and women who helped win the Second World War overwhelmingly backed its creation. We owe it to them and future generations to protect it at all costs.
• Help local people in Southport develop worker owned cooperatives to reinvigorate the high streets and local economy. Keeping the wealth generated in the town here for longer keeping the local economy stable and resilient. I’m a big believer in community wealth building. It isn’t something just for other places we can have it too.
