Southport FC has been saddened to learn of the death of our former player, Terry McDonald, who passed away this week, aged 71.

Terry, who was part of the successful Southport teams which reached the last 16 of the FA Cup in 1965/66 and earned promotion to the old Third Division a season later, made 33 appearances for the Sandgrounders.

Born in Belfast, Terry joined Southport in 1965 having started out at Leeds United and Middlesbrough and was capped by Northern Ireland at schoolboy level.

Terry, a full-back, played in five of the seven ties which saw Southport reach the fifth round of the FA Cup under the management of Billy Bingham, including the notable wins over Ipswich Town and Cardiff City.

He also spent the following season at Haig Avenue but was troubled by a persistent ankle injury and joined Barrow in 1967.

Terry continued to live in the area, was a popular figure in the local football community and attended games. He remained close to Bingham and played a key part in the two reunions in recent years to celebrate the FA Cup run and promotion-winning season.

Our condolences are with his son Darren and his family at this sad time.
