This year's policing operation at the Aintree Festival has been hailed a success.

Around 150,000 racegoers attended the three day event and each day has seen a great atmosphere with good-natured crowds.Aintree 1Chief Superintendent Dave Charnock said: "The Grand National Festival always brings large crowds to Aintree and this year the event was no exception.

"During the course of the three days the vast majority of those attending were able to safely enjoy a good natured atmosphere and have a great time.

"Our officers have really enjoyed engaging with racegoers and it has been very pleasing to see the support the public has shown for them, in particular as our Merseyside Police Mounted Section launch their Stand Tall sponsorship campaign to help keep police horses on our streets.

"Despite the high number of racegoers there has only been five arrests on the course over the three days and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone, including those who worked during the festival, for conducting themselves in an impeccable manner and helping to make this a safe and enjoyable occasion for all those who attended."

- Three men were arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly, one man was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and one man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a Class A drug.
