Division 1

This week saw joint leaders at the top of the table of Division 1 of the Ormskirk & District Amateur Snooker League in Olympic BC B & Southport Conservative Club. Olympic BC B recorded a comprehensive 5-1 defeat of five man Stanley Club A. This was their second consecutive 5 point haul of the current campaign. This match saw Olympic B's Paul Williams in sensational form with a terrific break of 70 in his frame success to capture this week's 'Break of the Week' prize.

Paul's break began very early in the frame with a trademark opening long red ball pot to gain ideal position on the blue ball. After dispatching the blue ball Paul then went on to a further red balls, all with high valued colours, with his usual precise potting and pinpoint positional play. Paul then faced a difficult sixth red where he had to thinly cut it into a tight middle pocket. He potted it with aplomb to arrive perfectly on the pink ball. After overcoming that difficult hurdle and potting the pink, Paul's break reached the 43 point mark. Paul then continued to pot a further 4 reds, again with high valued colours, to bring his break to 70. After over-screwing on the previous black ball, Paul was then faced with a very thin cut on his next red. Unfortunately he very narrowly missed it, to sadly bring an end to a fabulous contribution.

Southport Conservative Club are the other joint leaders as they ended their evening with a superb 6-0 demolition of Olympic BC A to sit at the top of the table as joint leaders on 10 points. This match saw the prolific Gareth Hibbott in his usual very solid form with a well constructed break of 47 in his frame win. No doubt these two teams will be there right at the business end of the current season.

Maghull RBL A moved into fifth place in the league standings with a 4-2 victory over last week's leaders Aughton Institute A. This was a close contest but at 2-2, the Maghull side showed their authority and went on to capture the last 2 frames to seal their win. This match saw Maghull RBL A's Mark Evans in good form with a nice break of 30 in his frame success. This result saw the Aughton A outfit drop into third place in the table.

Upholland Social showed signs of last year's consistent form with a commanding 5-1 success over St Cuthbert's. This match saw Upholland's Peter Hardaker in good nick with a nice break of 32 in his frame win. The Upholland side move up into fourth spot in the league standings, some 3 points off the pace setters.

The other match played this week saw Skelmersdale Wardens A gaining a victory at the second time of asking with a 4-2 triumph at the expense of Scarisbrick NSC. This result saw the Skelmersdale Wardens team move up into sixth slot in the league table.

The match between Maghull RBL B & Aughton Institute E was postponed due to work and holiday commitments of the Aughton Institute E side.

Rainford X SSC sat out their free week this time around.

I will start writing a brief report of the Merit League standings after week three when the standings start to take a little shape.

Division 2

Aughton Institute C continue as the early pace-setters of the Second Division as this time around they recorded their second successive 5-1 triumph. This week they comprehensively defeated last season's Champions, Stanley Club B, by that scoreline to open up a healthy four point advantage at such an early stage in the campaign. The Burscough side, on the
other hand, have made a very slow start to their proceedings and sit in a lowly seventh in the
league table. This match saw Aughton C's Steve Moss in good form with a nice break of 22 in his frame win.

Aughton Institute B got their season off in emphatic style, after last week's postponement, with a superb 6-0 away demolition of Skelmersdale Wardens B to move into second position in the standings and sit those four points behind the leaders but they have an important match in hand.

Farmers Club continue to occupy joint third place after they ended their evening with a second successive 3-3 draw. This week they clashed with Aughton Institute D and both teams could not be separate at the end of the match. The Aughton D outfit hold sixth slot in the league proceedings.

The other match played this week saw Stanley Club C and Skelmersdale Wardens C go into battle and it saw the spoils shared at the end of the evening's play were a 3-3 stalemate was reached. The Skelmersdale C side lie in joint third spot in the table whilst the Stanley C team were getting their campaign off and running after last week's postponement.
