The number of Lib Dem Councillors in Southport who have recently become independents has gone up to three - with rumours there may be more on the way.
Norwood Ward Councillors Matianne Welsh and Bill Welsh have left the Sefton MBC Lib Dem group joining former Deputy Leader Councillor Tony Dawson as independent councillors. There are now as many independent councillors are there are members of the Sefton Conservative Group.
Councillor Tony Dawson said:
"All major political parties are broad churches and people have to be prepared to work with those with whom they disagree on certain issues. But there are always going to be serious problems if a party with 'Liberal' in it's name is strongly felt to be allowing illiberality."
"My understanding is that both Councillors Welsh intend to continue their service to local people as true independents. Since neither of the Welsh are Thatcherites like Les Byrom and Tony Crabtree I cannot see them joining the Labour group."
"Like all councillors in Southport, I hope, I imagine that they will want to continue working constructively for the best interests of the town and its people."

Anyone who is elected and subsequently changes their political allegiance should stand down as a matter of principle. If people voted for them as an individual they will be re-elected, if people voted for the party then they will fail. Simples.
Of course if the Councillors believe their personal prestige is more important than the wishes of the electorate then they will remain in place.

I quite agree, but of course if they stand down they are not councillors any more and the money stops. Years ago councillors did the task for free as part if their civic duty for their business success in the aera

So Labour's majority on Sefton Council increases again.

Not really.
Labour's majority is simply the difference between the number of seats held by Labour and those held by all other parties.
If the Councillors had defected to Labour the majority would have increased by six, but they are Independents so no change.

Yes you're quite correct. What I should have said is that it has weakened the Lib Dems strength to oppose Labour.

It is my firm belief that local councillors should work purely in the interests of the local people, NOT a political party. Therefore ALL councillors should be independent.

i.e. They're now a busted flush, a total irrelevance in local politics now.
