This is the moment that contractors working for Sefton Council started to rip up the iconic Red Tarmac on Lord Street. Controversially it will be replaced with black tarmac.
Cllr David Barton commented...
Whilst I welcome this thorough measure for the benefit of the local community I would still request the Sefton Cabinet reconsider their present decision to use Black Tarmac in place of the historic Ruby Red Tarmac which could still be used.
Whether in its pure form or some incarnation this is a vital signature feature of our local beloved high street which is cherished by many here and beyond Southport.
Having now also directly appealed to the Cabinet Member Portfolio Holder I gratefully await a response as to whether my own Consultation data & research coupled with that of the Civil Engineers I have been in close liaison with may yet be taken forward in spite of unhelpful remarks in some quarters.

The funds raised from the Golf Tournament and the Air Show - should have been more than enough to allow for Red Tarmac on Lord Street. These events were not held in Liverpool, nor Bootle - Southport provides huge contributions to the joint Liverpool/Sefton money pot - the least that the council could do is to ensure that Southport retains its Victorian character.

Shouldn`t this article correctly state that A Certain Person quoted is in fact suspended at the present moment?
Getting back to the issue at hand; this is just a road passing through an unremarkable area in an even more unremarkable town. Some people really need to get a grip on reality,

Here's a question. The corporation colours for Bootle were red and cream. Prior to 1974 Bootle had red and cream lampposts. Along comes Sefton and that stops
However the council continued to do this in Southport.

Would this have been allowed IF Southport was still in Lancashire,in regards to having the colour of the tarmac changed from Red to Black ? As most councils are told to have these cutbacks by the government, and is NOT done by the councils themselves.
As long as the surfacing is done to a high standard, unlike some of the roads which have been relaid, then what else can the local council be expected to do ? As this is'nt just about Southport,it is a nationwide problem at the present time.

Southport used to be far from unremarkable, it was a classic resort and it stands in an area that has so many attributes. It has been left to rot due to a council who have no vision and no understanding of what it was and what it has the potential to be.

meanwhile in Southport there are armed robberies, muggings, "acid" attacks, drug dealers and youths abusing passers by - get a grip. There are more important things to worry about than the colour of the bloody tarmac

What I find totally unacceptable is the council buying Bootle New Strand for £35 million then say they have no budget left for the red tarmac on Lord Street, well maybe if they didn't by that dump of a Strand they would of had the money, but yet again Southport town not cared about by Sefton Council.
