Merseyside Police Band commemorated the 150-year anniversary of the Merseyside (formerly Liverpool) Police Band on Tuesday, 31 July, with a series of concerts at the Museum of Liverpool.
The band, thought to be the oldest Police Band in the country, was formed as Liverpool Police Band in 1868, performing an inaugural concert on the steps of St George’s Hall. It now features serving and retired officers from Merseyside Police and other forces, as well as musicians from all walks of life.
The volunteer band members now regularly perform for schools and community events across Merseyside.
Musical Director Eddie Pickering Major (Ret’d) MBE ARCM, who said: "We are immensely proud of our musical support role with Merseyside Police and the pleasure it has brought to the people of Merseyside over the past 150 years and are delighted to have been invited by our great friends at the Museum of Liverpool to perform for the many visitors to this wonderful city landmark."
Merseyside Police Chief Constable Andy Cooke said: "It is fantastic to see our much-loved police band reach this incredible milestone.
"They have added to the famous musical landscape of Liverpool and Merseyside for a long time, and I hope they continue to do so for many years to come.
"I look forward to being there at the museum on Tuesday to enjoy their performance and mark their birthday in style."
Merseyside Police Commissioner Jane Kennedy said: "Merseyside Police Band is probably the oldest police band in the UK, and their performances at concerts for community events and local schools have been enjoyed by thousands over the years. They are a wonderful asset and I am very grateful to the members for the commitment they give to their music and the credit they bring to the Force."
Janet Dugdale, Director of the Museum of Liverpool said: "We’re honoured that the Merseyside Police Band have chosen to play at the Museum of Liverpool to celebrate their 150th anniversary. Reaching this milestone is a real achievement. We are looking forward to supporting the Band as they share some very special birthday music with our visitors."
