Dramatic scenes as a police chase ends on the taxi rank at Southport Station.
Merseyside Police can confirm that a 35-year-old man from Huyton has been arrested on suspicion of a range of offences including attempt abduction, attempt serious assault of a police officer, dangerous driving, criminal damage and driving whilst over the prescribed limit for a specified drug.
Officers were called by a member of the public, who reported that they had seen the driver of a small white van approach a teenage girl in the Litherland area of Liverpool. The girl had walked off from the van, but the driver then started to drive slowly around the area.
A police patrol attended the scene just after 7.30pm and saw the van, which then rammed a police car and drove towards a Police officer at the roadside, before being driven off at speed down Hatton Hill Road towards the roundabout. The driver of the patrol car was uninjured, but shaken up following the collision.
The car was spotted by another patrol car a few minutes later and a pursuit took place through Formby and Southport. At times, the driver of the van was seen to drive on the wrong side of the Formby Bypass in addition to driving the wrong way around numerous roundabouts in the face of oncoming traffic. Stop sticks were successfully deployed to stop the car and at 8.15pm it came to a stop outside the railway station on London Street, Southport, where the driver was arrested.
Following the incident the Force has received a call from a member of the public whose car was damaged by the offender’s vehicle.
Officers have also been contacted by the family of the teenage girl, who was approached by the male and investigations are continuing.
Anyone who has any information which may help the police with their inquiries is asked to contact Sefton C.I.D. 0151 7773835, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 quoting reference number: 0516240614.
So that's why six Merseyside traffic cars were piling into Southport at 8pm this evening, officers with Stingers on the Coast Rd and all for a clapped out sodding van!!

What would your preferred course of action be? Stand in the road and politely ask them to stop? Feel free to volunteer your services.

& on a more sensible note, i'm glad this potentially dangerous scumbag has been taken off the streets. God knows what might have happened if he had got a young girl in his Van?

45 minute chase with six vehicles, frankly I'd have rammed him off the road far earlier given the charges reported and the driver had gone the wrong way down the Formby By-pass! It's not like they were chasing a fast vehicle was it?

Pity you weren't there when it started you could have rammed him in your car, do you think the Police have unlimited numbers of BMW traffic cars to replace a damaged one. Plus the PC brigade would be outraged should the knob driving the van have been hurt or even worse killed as a result of ramming the van the Police officer driving could have been suspended from driving Police vehicles for causing an RTC plus he could have faced court proceedings for the injuries to the scumbag. Criminals vandals and any other sort of trash have it all on their side in these enlightened times.

Hilarious video. This really doesn't look good for the Police, reminiscent of the OJ Simpson chase... Surely a spectacular failure of co-ordination to allow a dangerous driver to travel all the way from Liverpool and not get a stinger under him etc to stop him before he got into residential areas of Southport...
