Report: Trish Ireland
Dr. Sacha Youzguin, Consultant Respiratory Physician at Southport Hospital, kindly took time out of his busy schedule to come and speak to our members again. He provided updates about Respiratory Disease and treatments and answered questions put by his audience.
His talk was very interesting, and he included details of a new inhaler that has treble functions, rather than just one. Our members were also pleased to hear that there is now a new team of three Specialist Respiratory Nurses working with Dr. Youzguin and his colleagues at Southport Hospital. Respiratory Disease is very prevalent in the north west of England and we know the team will be kept very busy.
At another recent meeting, the speaker was John Flanagan from MAVS, Merseyside Asbestos Victim Support group. John showed us a most interesting film, followed by an eye-opening talk about the community's widespread exposure to asbestos during the 20th century, the misleading differentiation which has been put in the public's mind regarding 'Blue' and 'White' asbestos, and the development and prevalence of MESOTHELIOMA. He told us about the International Asbestos Lobby, the work of MAVS in lobbying, as well as providing support to individual sufferers and their families. John also provided us with current statistics - there are approximately 2600 deaths from Mesothelioma every year. Those who worked in the Building Industry, when asbestos was used extensively, are now amongst those at risk, together with others who worked as electricians and in the Motor Industry. There was much more to say, but unfortunately we ran out of time, and we are therefore delighted to say that John has very kindly agreed to return to speak to us again in 2019!
Our meetings take place on the third Monday of each month, from 11 a.m. to approx. 12. 45 a.m , (doors open at 10.35 am), at the Girl Guide HQ in Green Lane, Ormskirk, L39 2DJ. The first half hour sees us enjoying a healthy, lung-expanding singalong, led by the Power of Music Duo. Then we enjoy light refreshments, followed by our invited speaker. All are welcome!
There are three local Breathe Easy groups in west Lancashire at Ormskirk, Formby and Skem. For information about the West Lancs. and Southport Group, please phone Trish on 07528 702203, for information about the Breathe Easy Sefton North Group, which meets monthly near Formby Railway Station, contact Simon on 07552 182032, and for information about the Skelmersdale Group, which meets monthly at the Ecumenical Centre, please phone Mike on 01695-724358.
As local support groups of the national charity, the British Lung Foundation, all our groups are very friendly, offering detailed information, support and friendship to Respiratory patients, family members, carers or friends.
