Hundreds of Labour supporters protest in Southport against "scandalous and dangerous" NHS Winter Crisis.
Just over 200 Labour campaigners gathered in High Park today to protest against the "scandalous and dangerous" problems at Southport Hospital and the current crisis in the NHS
The activists were addressed by Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram, as well as Sefton MP and Shadow Minister for Small Business, Bill Esterston, and local Parliamentary Candidate, Liz Savage, before setting out to brave the rain to leaflet and canvass in Norwood and Kew wards and set up a street stall in the town centre.
The campaigners were told how eight years of underfunding under the Conservatives has resulted in the worst winter crisis on record with over 1 in 8 patients across NHS England having to wait in ambulances for treatment for over half an hour, 25,000 of them for over an hour; while average bed occupancy hit 93.9%, substantially above the recommended safe rate of 85%.
Labour's Southport Parliamentary Candidate, Liz Savage, also described the local situation:
"Just a fortnight ago we raised concerns about what was happening at Southport Hospital and its A&E and were falsely accused of "scaremongering" by the local Tory MP, who claimed all was well at the hospital.
"Since then we've discovered that it is very nearly 15% below the four-hour treatment target and one of its A&E consultants felt compelled along with 67 others from across NHS England to write to Theresa May warning of chronic underfunding, systematic failure and patients dying in corridors. "
"Only yesterday the local trust had to put out an urgent appeal for nurses over Twitter due to the pressure it was under. It's a scandalous and dangerous situation but Southport's MP and his party colleagues are dangerously complacent about it. We will not be. "
Other MP's from the region also turned out with Bootle's Peter Dowd, Walton's Dan Carden and Wirral West's Margaret Greenwood joining local campaigners and activists from across Merseyside and Lancashire.
The event is one of two in the North West organised as part of a nationwide "Action Day" highlighting the difficulties the NHS is facing.
Jonathan Ashworth MP, Labour's Shadow Health Secretary, said
“Action Saturday is an opportunity for our passionate network of activists and supporters to mobilise in defence of our NHS. This unprecedented winter crisis has united our Labour movement around the shared goal of fighting together to safeguard the future of our NHS .
“Under the Tories, our NHS has been left underfunded, understaffed and overstretched. Despite the heroic efforts of our NHS staff, thousands of vulnerable patients have been left languishing on trolleys, stuck in the backs of ambulances and unable to receive the social care packages they urgently need.
“Labour founded the NHS, our proudest achievement, and on the year of its 70th anniversary we will fight to save the NHS from Tory underfunding, cuts and privatisatio

Just over 200 is actually hundreds, or can you not get past your fingers and toes? While the beach rally had thousands. Your usual nasty rant stuff trying to distract from the actual issue, which is that the Tories and our local MP are happy letting the NHS crumble and local residents suffer as a result.

Well as there's one heck of a lot of things to protest about at present, Labour will be getting a lot of votes then won't they?
What you don't seem to get is that this IS normal service under this completely incompetent Tory Govt. Thankfully, a lot of other folks though are realising it.

We know recognition and counting is beyond the average Tory befuddled brain, but like it or not a good number of people have simply had enough of Tory lies and incompetence, hopefully slowly but surely enough will see through the sick joke that the Tories are financially competent.
How about addressing or recognising that there is a problem or do we stick to Tory mantra of crisis, what crisis?.

Capitalism is out of hand, the country is under the rack of the profit takers, rather than the builders, producers, makers and manufacturers, currently the infection is rampant with the disgrace of Carillion a classic example.

When are people going to wake up and smell the roses, it doesn't matter which party are in power, they are all lie to suit themselves and their party.

What do you recommend as an alternative a Committee of upright business men to run the Country from their tax haven off shore homes Philip Green/Richard Branson/the Board of Carillion/a few illiterate footballers/some football agents/the contents of the celebrity big brother house. Whichever way you look in this world the Rich get Rich at the expense of the poor but some of the poor rob the rich so they can join them in robbing the poor.
Money talks the more you have the more you are heard the less you have the noise you make is just an irritation to the noisy barstewards.

Did Diane Abbott count the number of attendees? "Hundreds"? More like 30 if those photos are to be believed.

There's been an annual winter crisis in the NHS for as long as I can remember, regardless of who is in power. The system needs radical reform but no-one will do it while everyone treats the NHS as the state religion. It is a badly flawed system that no other developed country has tried to emulate because it doesn't work well. Meanwhile all we get is sentimental "Jewel in the crown.... angelic nurses.... blah blah blah....". With a massively increasing population and a never ending list of new (often inessential) treatments being offered the situation will continue to get worse.
Meanwhile a couple of dozen self-serving Momentum folk meet for a bit of political football.... Zzzzz

Dav well said, especially that no other country has emulated and many other countries producing better services and results. No party has the balls for a radical overhaul as too much of a political football

I do wish that feĺlow Steve Rotheram would get on with his job as City Region Mayor or if truth be told that whole job is just a sham and a total waste of time and money.

Has anyone seen the state of the NHS in Venezuela? You know, the Venezuela that Jeremy Corbyn thinks is a perfect example of how to run an economy!
You couldn't make it up!
