In two years’ time, Merseyrail passengers will be travelling in style on board a fleet of new, state-of-the-art trains which will transform travel in the Liverpool City Region and potentially beyond.

Arriving in 2020, the trains will be safer, faster, modern and able to carry more people. They will have sliding step technology providing unassisted access for all and you will be able to get on and off the train more easily.

Network Rail will be carrying out vital work to the platforms at stations to get ready for their arrival. The works will involve station and line closures but rail replacement buses will be in operation.

More information will be released closer to the time of each closure, letting you know exactly how your station and line will be affected but you can still get from A to B. You may see no difference at first, but you’ll definitely feel the benefits in the long-run.

Merseytravel, Merseyrail and Network Rail have worked together to put a plan in place to not only keep people moving but also minimise that disruption and the time needed to complete these important works.

We have also worked closely with the district councils and key city region partners to avoid as far as possible other engineering works and major events to ensure that the Liverpool City Region remains open for business.

There is more information, fact sheets and images available about your new trains on the Merseytravel website.

There will be 11 phases of works during this period. Only short sections of one line will be closed at any one time, with all stations on that section closed. Closures will vary in duration, but most will be between nine and 30 days at a time.

High quality, rail replacement buses will get passengers to where they need to go as quickly as possible and some of these will be express services.

Alternative transport services such as commercial buses and the Mersey Ferries may also be a good option for you.

More detailed information will be available before each phase and you should visit the Merseyrail website for more detailed information. You will be able to find out how your journey is affected through a special journey planner on the Merseyrail website too.

    How you can help
    Key advice is:
You can still get to where you need to go – but you will need to make changes to your journey.
Check before you travel - Closures are taking place at different locations at different times on the network so it’s important to keep checking what’s happening and when.
Plan ahead – use journey planners.
Leave more time for your journey - Some timetables may change.
Don’t take the car, stick to public transport.
Consider avoiding travelling at peak times where possible.
Consider your options – other public transport options including Mersey Ferries and commercial buses may be a good alternative.

Judging by the picture (impression) the ails are wider which means the seats are closer together, so you can't even put your hand into your pocket without touching the person next to you.
With the ails being wider they can cram even more people onto the already over packed cattle trucks.

    will they have loos?

No... Sadly a missed opportunity I believe. Their reasoning is every station has toilet facilities and with trains every 15 mins you can get off, use the toilet and continue on the next one.
