One of the many drivers for the creation of the BID was concerns about falling visitor numbers to the town. Footfall had been in steady decline in Southport for several years, as it has been in high streets, town and city centres around the country. Footfall in the town is measured by independently managed footfall cameras installed in Chapel Street and on Lord Street. The data is compiled and presented by a nationally recognised data management company.

Since the BID started its programme, the declining trend in footfall has been reversed, whereas UK footfall overall, and that of the average for the country’s other coastal towns and resorts has continued to fall. This positive trend has continued into 2017; this January’s footfall for Southport was 6% higher than it was over the same period in 2016. The UK, and coastal town’s average continued to drop – we are bucking the trend.

Data compiled by STEAM – the official body for tourism economic activity monitoring also shows positive figures for Southport

    Visitor Numbers – 8.65m up 4.5%

    Economic Impact – £498.08m up 5.7%

    Total VE employment – 6,340 up 3%

Why they come to Southport? One of life's mysteries.

I quite agree. I never understand why people do that, particularly early on in a thread.

This could get messy, So I'll break the trend ;-)

Good to see a positive up turn, lets hope it continues and the BID team get some recognition for their hard work. As there is very little positive said about them on this site.

Pointless figures unless they are spending, the town is dying and people trumpet vacuous figures.

Perhaps there are fewer miserable sour-faced locals in the town centre putting visitors off.

Ah heck, I was rather hoping that the trend would keep going on and on.!
    😂

Interesting that the spreadsheet model generated by STEAM to produce the above data, relies solely on information provided by the BID team!

Its not as if they are going to shoot themselves in the foot is it :-)

so what is the town centre for?????.....cars and shoppers not welcome and pushed out, to out of town shops.....we have vast areas doing absolutely nothing in our town centre, all the various gardens on lord st, deserted chapel st,tulketh st,in front of the town hall, all deserted, we could park thousand of cars and shoppers there, the car is not the enemy its the council, so what brilliant purpose is the town centre being cleared for??????? clueless town centre managers...just put our town back to how it was in the seventies

  13. paulollie says:08/02/2017 04:43 PM
I do hope that when I am shopping in the Town Centre, having a good meal in any number of restaurants and a good few scops of juice in many a bar......I don't come across the morbid, depressing sods that comment on here.

If you want to slit your wrists on the so called ever decreasing Town Centre then please moan about it elsewhere.

And before anybody else comments I do not view everything through "rose tinted" specs, just like to see a glass half full not empty.

That would mean no internet which means we wouldn't have to read your moronic garbage. Sounds good to me.

You need to understand these figures and how useless they are.

Or perhaps a walk around the town centre might give some more visual clues.

Good to see all the pound shops and charity shops propping up the local economy
