The figure, which includes costs, followed hearings at South Sefton Magistrates Court on Tuesday, April 18 brought about by Sefton Council.

Many of the cases were proven in absence and those fined included: William Bates (52), Westminster Avenue, Netherton, Lauren Hunt (20), Chambres Road, Southport, Shauma Hunt (44), Rockhouse Street, Liverpool, Megan Kershaw (19), Weld Road, Birkdale, Simon Mutch (61), Trinity Road, Bootle, Karen Ratcliffe (27), Ashley Road, Southport and Stephanie Williamson (20), Churchtown Road, Liverpool.

Mary Ross (61), Bede Road, Bedworth made a guilty plea at court.

A spokesman for Sefton Council said: “People need to realise that dropping any form of litter is not acceptable behaviour.

“Residents and visitors to the borough need to understand that they are responsible for correctly disposing of their own waste and we will not hesitate in following court proceedings for those who flout the law.

“Court cases like this highlight what can happen if you are caught and we hope it will make people think twice before just throwing their waste away.”

So what about the "travellers", mentioned on another post on here? Are they above the law? Or are the enforcement officers interested only in easy targets?

If you are a law abiding citizen of the Uk,paying ALL of your taxes, for property, work, and insuring your vehicles, then you WILL be prosecuted, but if not,you can get away with doing whatever you want in this country,as rules do NOT seem to apply to travellers etc,in this 2-tier Police state we now seem to be living in.

Whilst in no way condoning the dropping of litter, and being totally in agreement with the amount the Court has fined these people, do you really think that these spineless cowards, employed by the Council as enforcement officers are going to tackle the likes of the travellers?

Totally agree, the enforcement team should be threatened with legal action if they do not apply the littering laws to all offenders equally.

Typical of today's selective action to law breakers.

Not only the "travellers" so much fly tipping in the area, very rarely is anyone caught, these enforcement officers will look for the easy target usually someone alone, I would very much doubt that they would approach our current crop of brain dead vandals either.

Would you? Or are you like plenty of the keyboard warriors on here whom vigorously assert that they certainly would - but only from the safety of their bedrooms.
Those Enforcement Officers operate as directed by their managers under the instructions and guidance of the elected members.
To tackle the Traveller 's would require the support of the Police and a political will of which both are sadly lacking.
Where you living in a box when the Council tried to evict and enforce against a group of travellers in Essex and the resources that tied up? Which service would you cut to fund it.
Try and have a little think before you slag off workers who are simply doing their job as directed.
