Crescent Road crossing has seen many tragedies over the years but the last time a car ended up on the tracks was in December 2008 when a woman dressed as a clown drove onto the tracks. Qlocal takes a look back.
A female motorist escaped certain death tonight when she drove her car onto a live train track at Crescent Road level crossing, Birkdale, Southoport. The accident happened at approximately 5:30pm (Saturday 13th December 2008).
The woman who was dressed up in a clowns outfit thought she was driving into Dover Road but ended up driving on the railway line.
She left her car engine running and immediately got out of her vehicle and walked to safety.
There was a Southport bound train only minutes away at Hillside station when the accident happened.
The vehicle remains wedged on the track.
The emergency services are at the scene.

The 57-year-old female motorist who drove her car onto live railway lines at Crescent Road, Birkdale on Sunday night has been told she could face prosecution for careless driving, endangering public safety and obstructing the railway.
A British Transport Police spokesman said: "We can confirm that a 57-year-old woman from Southport has been reported for a notice of intended prosecution for careless driving, endangering safety and obstruction of the railway.
"This follows an incident at the Crescent Road level crossing in Southport in which the woman appeared to have got her car stuck in the cattle grid section of the crossing.
"Police enquires into this matter are ongoing."

For the sake of pure pedantry, the first clown incident was at Ainsdale.
