Sefton Council considering plans to close dozens of play parks has suggested children "make daisy chains" instead.
Sefton Council has proposed removing play equipment, fences, paths and bins in up to 140 parks in a new report.
It recommends making Sefton's parks more "natural" in order to save money and suggests children make "dens, daisy chains" and "environmental art".
The council needs to make savings of £64m after cutting £120m since 2010.
The Labour-run council says it is still discussing the plan and will put the final proposals out to public consultation after councillors have reassessed it in September.
The 28 "main" parks in the borough would undergo only minor changes.
But 140 smaller parks risk losing their play areas, bins, fences and litter picking services as well as "ornamental features" if there is "no community interest" shown in "taking on the sites".
The proposal states that removing play areas means children "need to play differently" and suggests "making dens, daisy chains, creating environmental art from long grass and wildflowers... forest play with fallen twigs, leaves, fruit and seeds etc."
Councillor Paulette Lappin, cabinet member for regulation and corporate resource, said she is unsure what people will think of the plans but wants to consider "all the different options".
She said the council has to lose "an incredible amount of money" but needs to "provide the best and safest service".
"We have to protect the elderly, the most vulnerable but we actually want to maintain our green spaces - they're the jewels in our crown."

how much longer and how many people will have to suffer before the council decides that enough is enough, there comes a point where you start to think that something wrong. is the money going somewhere it shouldnt, whats left to save money on... it wont happen but just getting rid of a couple of hangers on or councillors could save an awful lot money

Getting rid of this austerity obsessed conservative government or forcing them to repent and raise a few taxes in order to stop cutting grants to councils is the way to go.I would happily accept 1p on the basic rate. It's to late to save the libraries but surely nothing else should go.

If they are stuck for money they could sell the 2 aluminium and perspex signs advertising the " Market quarter" They cost £108,000 , I know one is held together with gaffer tape but there must be some mug willing to buy them, or even flog off the useless exercise machines that adorn the sea wall and various other venues around Sefton, I bet they were not cheap.

If you can point to a Government that has won a General Election promising to "raise a few taxes" then I'd be interested to know which party it was and when they were elected.

It is time for a rebellion against the cuts.
What a waste of money destroying things that they have installed!
How can that make any kind of sense?
I despair!
Better still get rid of the extremely expensive "Consultants" that they paid disgusting amounts of money in order that they tell the Council how to SAVE money...... I bet they (the consultants) never even consider that dispensing with them (the consultants) could help the economy!

I do love the way the morons who run our council spend loads of our money revamping stuff (like the park play equipment shown) just to close them down or let them rot. What a bunch of pillocks.

Was there any mention of the park in the picture being closed down?

Well they are not going to save much with this metro mayor nonesense since the start up costs are estimated to be £7 million !!
And who knows how much a mayor of the entire Sefton region will get paid !! It will be a pretty penny for sure !
I think our council are experts at spending money on useless and unwanted things ! After all we have our fair share of useless decorations and oversized features dotted around the place !

Reduce the number of councillors per ward, that would save a fair amount of expenses claimed and like us would make them workplace harder to maintain the status quo. Payment for attendance at meetings is totally unnecessary.

No but if you read it again it states in brackets ( LIKE the one shown in pics above) ie there will be parks /play areas of a similarity to this getting closed down and changed

The park in the picture was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery Fund “Parks for People” programme, nothing to do with Sefton Council.
http://www.southportvisiter.co.uk/ne...-after-6603409
Which explains why it's been designed and built very well!
