Just one month until the Royal Wedding in Windsor.

And with more than 100,000 people expected to travel to the big event on 19 May, British Transport Police officers are gearing up to help them get there safely.

We’ll have officers – both highly visible and covert – across the network, at key stations across the routes into Windsor, and in the town itself.

So for people planning to travel on the 19th, they will see an enhanced police presence throughout their journey.

Ch Supt John Conaghan said: “After months of planning, we’re looking forward to ensuring the safe travel of thousands of people into Windsor, and then home again, on 19 May.

“Officers will be highly visible at stations throughout London and the South East and will be on hand to offer help to anyone who needs it.

“We’ve worked closely with our partners at other police forces, local authorities and train companies to ensure that we can respond quickly and decisively to any incident – whatever it may be.”

In support of the operation, we’ll have specialist firearms units at key stations, including those in London and both Windsor stations.

Our highly trained Specialist Response Unit (SRU) colleagues will be also be out on the network. They respond to reports of unattended items on the railway, assess items and determine if they pose any threat to the public.

We will also be deploying our behavioural detection officers and police dogs at key stations, so they’ll be able to respond to incidents on the rail network.

Ch Supt Conaghan said: “Passengers are the eyes and ears of the rail network and with thousands of extra people travelling to Windsor, I’d urge them to stay vigilant and report concerns to us. Nothing is too trivial or insignificant – report it to us, and our specialist police officers will investigate.”

Anyone can report crime or suspicious behaviour to BTP by calling 0800 40 50 40, or by discreetly texting 61016.

Andy Mellors, Managing Director of South Western Railway, said:

“We are very proud to be running train services to Windsor on the day of the Royal Wedding. It will be a momentous occasion which is why we’ve doubled our direct services from Waterloo to four an hour and will be running full ten-carriage trains to make sure we get as many of our customers to Windsor as possible.

“We know that our services are likely to be extremely busy on the day itself and that there may be queuing systems in place at key stations which is why we’re working closely with our colleagues at British Transport Police.”
