The Southport BID want to gain a better picture of people’s opinions of Southport in the evenings and why they do or don’t eat, drink and socialise in Southport town centre. It will only take 5 minutes. Thank you for helping!

Change the late licence for the bars, regular police presence to deter deadbeat hoodies and beggars

  4. jonnybgood says:13/02/2017 06:36 PM
Put the Late night bars back to a 2.00am closing time,or the latest to 3.00am,at least then the trouble that is mainly caused between 3.30am to 5.00am while the Police changeover takes place, may cease to occur during this time,as that is when it seems most incidents happen.
And also the changing of the drinking times to almost 24/7 has NOT helped, and the amount of underage drinkers beggars belief,as you can instantly tell,by the way that they speak, that they are not old enough to be allowed into the late night bars, most talking about going to school on Mondays,so obviously NOT over 21 yrs old,you could blame the door staff for allowing them into these places, but these clubs need the money from anyone it seems.
The Council should make use of the Old Casino on Lord Street,by completely soundproofing the building, and making it into a DECENT Nightclub,as the other places in West Street are looking awful, and look depressing places for people to go to,and having 9 nightclubs in a very small area does'nt help if there is any trouble.
Southport could do with somewhere like the Dixieland, and the Kingsway used to be,and were large enough places to be able to enjoy nights out, whereas the better places seem to be either in Liverpool or Preston,as people are saying they feel safer going out of town to enjoy themselves at the weekend.

And where would the money be coming from for the council to buy it and convert it into a nightclub?

I agree, but there does seem to be a misconception amongst a lot of people who seem to think the council own every building in the town centre and are responsible for their use and set the rent and rates on them!

It is good for the Bid team to think about the evening life in our town,

But if we concentrate on the DAY life of our town and we are successful then the night life will take care of itself.

Here is something to think of.
WHY are day businesses penalised by parking fees. Yet night businesses like clubs are not.. free parking at night.

So at this time of the 5 year term our time and energy should be aimed at DAY life in the town. So we attract the best clientele back.

according to the Bid footfall is up but as evening approaches all these people vanish into thin air and the town looks like a nuclear wasteland with **** ed up zombies wandering around

A lot of people who I pick up in my taxi think that the late licencing should be scrapped and have either a 2 or 3am closing for all bars. Those who go out at midnight will just have to go out earlier.

That is what I hear all the time as well,we do NOT seem to have the same culture here as the people abroad when drinking,as people here just want to go out get drunk, and then cause mayhem, the ONLY passengers you pick up that seem more socialised,non-abusive are the foreign customers, don't have any problems with them at all,but the English customers, then they appear to be completely different, shouting, swearing, ignorant, abusive, and even think they have the right to eat and drink in a Taxi, even when told not to.Is it any wonder that there are NOT as many people going out into Southport at night, the last 2 times I went to town drinking was 2 and 6 years ago, with around 8 Hackney drivers on a pre-xmas night out.And both times I decided to walk home.
With it being that quiet at night at present I have decided to put my 2 year old vehicle, and Hackney plate up for sale.

im speaking as a ex town centre lover, i worked, lived (lord st, manchester rd, park rd) , loved and socialised every night in our once lovely centre in the 70s 80s 90s 10s...but times change, its no longer a pleasure to visit our town, i actually feel uncomfortable and slightly threatened in our centre at night, seems its full of dodgy characters and immigrants, i used to walk home feeling safe in the small hours up to 2009ish, i would never never do that now.....i avoid it at all costs, times have changed and we have moved on (as has most people), we now stick to local venues birkdale/churchtown etc where we all feel safer, its very sad as i remember wonderfull times in our town, el tonel, grapevine, lloyds bar, the scarisbrick etc etc, but now the town is not ours anymore we have withdrawn.....it now belongs to different people and nations,,,,i dont know whats ahead for it, but it wont involve me or my family..very sad but great memories

I couldn't agree with you more! I think also that most local people want the daytime issues addressed. It is not an inviting town at all, on many different levels.

Well I still live in town and still go out in town. Never had an issue walking home and never felt unsafe. Did it last Saturday night in the early hours and will do it again next Saturday.
That's not to say there aren't problems and incidents do occur but to paint it like some wild west town is well wide of the mark. Deal with the handful of idiots and the problems would be solved.

"the handfull of idiots" could cause you or me some harm...its not worth the risk, the police wont help you so who will...

There are lots of dire possibilities that could befall anyone at anytime. Should we all stay locked indoors 24/7 because we could get run over by a bus if we ventured outside?
