It has been announced by Sefton Council that the Mayor of the Borough of Sefton will be represented by three other councillors at the various Remembrance Sunday commemoration ceremonies in Crosby, Southport and Formby while the Mayor himself presides in Bootle. Strangely, each of the councillors said to be 'representing the Borough's Mayor' at the commemorations are all Bootle Labour councillors.

Traditionally, the Mayor of a borough council is meant to be independent and above party politics, however, in 2012 the Labour Party decided to break with the council's tradition and make the Sefton mayorality an extension of party politics. So, while there are 21 Southport councillors to choose from to represent the Mayor at tomorrow's Remembrance Sunday celebration, including several former mayors and other senior councillors, the Mayor's representative at the Southport Cenotaph tomorrow will be Bootle Labour councillor Ian Maher.

Geeez, truly unbelievable!! The only thing politicising Remembrance Sunday is this is press release, absolutely disgusting attempt to do so.

Did this come from local Lib-Dems? Got that whiff about it.

The Mayor can't be in several places and Ian Maher is the leader of the council so they are simply reflecting how important the town is by having him here as the replacement.

You can guarantee that if he didn't show here then they would have been jumping up and down about the "snub" to Southport on such an important day!

They are currently using absolutely any excuse and plumbing any depths to have a pop at Sefton... but this really is a new low!

Sounds like this was written in the style of prasnee or Cllr shaw but either way could be titled “will the libs stop at nothing At politicising any story”

Cllr Maher is the leader of the council rather than just Bootle Labour similarly is this an announcement that Lynne Thompson is defecting with the other disillusioned libs:

    http://mysefton.co.uk/2017/11/10/rem...-day-services/

Whilst we have the pettiness of Shaw and Dawson representing us the town will not benefit, you only have to read the other sites Facebook comments to get the measure of its ego, party then Southport in order of priorities.

The Southport councillors will be there anyway and if the council didn’t send anyone we’d be reading about “Bootle Labour doesn’t care about Southport, get us out of Sefton now so our libs can get a sniff of power”

Imagine being the mayor and having to pick someone to represent you. You're hardly going to choose the likes of Shaw, Dawson or Barton are you!

I do believe Cllr Shaw is indeed the author of most of the Lib Dem press releases disguised as news that appear on here (and usually word for word on The Other Site as well).

Their behaviour is absolutely disgraceful in both divisive politics and their hating on the other sites Facebook....absolutely appalling representation of the town and I’m disappointed the party leaders (paid extra £4K a year) don’t rein them in or the council leader doesn’t do similar as their behaviour and conduct can no way be seen to be for our collective benefit!

It will be interesting to see how speedily he is returned to the party fold now his patron Cllr Pugh is back in harness.

Well, he didn’t exactly keep him controlled in his other job so doubt be much different. We need these poisonous party before town attitudes changed or stopped, the town would be much better with independents (by choice not exile) as whilst party is first no one will work together and the benefits will be small....you only have to see how little the libs have achieved to see that

Intrigued that this "report" says the position of Mayor has been "politicised" since 2012. Except of course the year since 2012 that Cllr Maureen Fearn was mayor. Oh and Cllr Hands. And Cllr Brodie Browne. All Lib Dems.

It really does not matter who does or does not turn up at the Parade, those who are present are there to pay their respects, others prefer the privacy of their own homes to remember our heroes. The focus is on those who fought and died, or were injured fighting for our country. All British people, no matter what office they have in life - and I daresay there will be many whose importance is way above that of a councillor - should pay their respects personally - it does not matter who they are.
