Police are appealing for help in tracing a group of cyclists following an incident on Otterspool Promenade.
At around 1pm on Sunday 13th May an elderly couple were walking along the promenade, close to the Britannia Public House, when a large group of youths on pedal cycles approached them.
One of the youths was in collision with the couple, knocking both of them to the ground. It was later discovered that the female sustained serious injuries.
Officers are keen to trace and speak to this group of cyclists, who did initially stop, however they may not be aware of the extent of the injuries. It is believed it was an organised group, consisting of about 20 male youths aged 15-19 years with three adult supervisors.
Anyone who can assist in identifying this group is urged to contact Matrix Roads Policing on 0151 777 5747 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Just take a walk on our sea front. Whilst many cyclists act properly and safely, a significant and dangerous minority don’t. They do not keep to the cycle lane and travel at speeds in excess of the twenty mile an hour limit many car drivers are subject to.
I consider myself fairly fit and agile but many times have had to leap for safety ( no bells or warnings!!) it is only a matter of time before there is a serious ,or heaven forbid, fatal accident here. Cyclists who want to be Bradley Wiggins should be on the road, a bike ridden recklessly at speed is lethal. Should be subject to proper legal penalties.

There's no 20mph speed limit on the seafront

That kind of insular view reminds me of the reports of the local headlines when the Titanic sank:
DISASTER AT SEA - SOUTHPORT MAN DROWNED

I sincerely hope the injured woman gets better soon.
Cyclists who continuously ride at high speeds are arrogant, and have low self esteem. They ride at speed to prove to themselves and to the public that they can do so. They bullishly force a way past people and cause traffic to slow down to dangerously cause traffic queues. There are several quiet roads in and around Lancashire where cyclists who need to train for racing can do so without causing any bother to anyone. Where traffic is heavy or there are pedestrians, a cyclist should not speed at all. Cycling is enjoyable when taken at a leisurely pace to absorb everything going on around.
In the above reported situation, it would appear that there was a group of novice cyclists who were not paying due attention while cycling. The organisers should have
had one person leading and one person at the back of the group and should have been more observant. Not the best training for young cyclists.
