Last week my son-in-law was stopped at traffic lights with his 5 year old son in the car.

He was hit from behind by an uninsured / untaxed car with no MOT. The driver drove off through the red light.

The Police PNCd the vehicle that hit him and went round to see the registered keeper but he had sold it for cash to a man he didn't know in a pub (alledgedly!).

My son-in-law's car is a write off. So there goes his no claims. The has to pay the excess and he has all the agro of agreeing a value and finding another vehicle.

The more of these illegal drivers the Police take off the road the better.

I may be wrong but isn't it a legal requirement to notify the dvla of a sale of a vehicle, otherwise he simply lies. If he's still the registered keeper then either he was driving or possibly covering up for whoever was, it's like a speeding ticket or parking ticket you've 2 options, I was driving or I wasn't but so and so was, he wouldn't get away with "I sold it for cash in a pub to a bloke I don't know", I'd be back onto the police.

    Yep...

Criminal offence (not civil) 'failure to take reasonable steps to inform DVLA of a change of ownership or registered keeper'.....

I know....Royal Mail/DVLA lost a V5 I sent them once.. Took a lot of sorting out to avoid a criminal record for it !...

    Always send recorded now...
