The scene on Lord Street at 10.00 this morning as a homeless man sleeps on a bench as the world goes by.
People walk past him oblivious to the fact that he is there. Is he alive or dead?
Two PCSO's ride past on bikes and do not bother to check the poor man.
Fortunately the man is OK. Another man is sleeping rough in the shelter by the Municipal Golf Course with his dog.
What is going on in our town?

If only we had some decent local investigative journalists who could find out.

In answer to the question "Is he alive or dead?" the person who took the photograph would have got an answer if he/she had bothered to find out, instead of just walking away and leaving it to others.

Probably a local shelter is required, if think some of these wouldn't want to go to South Sefton, where everything seems to have been moved to these days.

Beggars can't be choosers.
Surely a roof over your head anywhere is preferable to night after night on the streets?

I personally looked into this situation around 12 months ago with a view to sorting something out. Most of these rough sleepers do so by choice. Only one was ex-services a couple won't go to a hostel because of the violence that exists inside them and some hostels only allow them to stay a short number of nights before moving them on. The majority are either drinkers or have mental health issues. All of them just wanted to be left alone and not abused or constantly woken up and moved on. They quite often sleep during the day because it's safer to stay awake during the night apparently.
It is a very complex issue.
