A Southport councillor, campaigning for the town to have an energy- producing lagoon, has been boosted by the government being advised to give the green light to a similar project in Swansea Bay.
“This is terrific news and points the way to what could happen here in Southport,” declared Kew Ward Councillor Fred Weavers. “A lagoon would bring tremendous benefits to the town including inward investment and new jobs.”
The government review has found that energy produced by lagoons is cost effective and affordable and Lib Dem representative and businessman Fred Weavers, added: I have been actively campaigning to regenerate Southport and promoting an energy lagoon as a cornerstone of it. It is crucial that Southport attracts greater investment because the resort has a bright, exciting future.
“We have to press the government to look at our plans for a Southport Lagoon. We are putting together a neighbourhood plan and I need Southport residents to help and support it.”
The plan is being backed by Southport MP John Pugh, who greeted the Government decision on Swansea Bay by saying: “This is a good step in the right direction for Southport towards more affordable green energy for our future. It is good news for our town.
“We've been in discussions with the developer for a while now and securing a lagoon would bring with it exciting opportunities for tourism, housing and sports in Southport."
Councillor Weavers is holding a public meeting about the plans later in the year and is inviting residents and business to contact him with their views and opinions on 07771 635332or frederick.weavers@councillors.sefton.gov.uk.

.
Feels a bit pie in the sky as my understanding is that the Swansea build will start 2022 at the earliest and take about 4 years. THEN the government will make decisions on future projects, none of the developer listed projects include Southport.
So interesting story but would hardly pin future backing of our councillors and MP who've had far too long to prove how they can bring investment to the town to need to wait at least another 6 years.

I think the business probably being referenced was dissolved a few years ago so maybe a bit unfair? I believe current business/living is renting property one of which is rented by the taxpayer for our MP/merry band to use for about £12k a year. However is a little confusing as according to some of the internet it's owned by the Gladstone club who in turn donate to the Southport Libs (as of around 2013 at least according to "Guido")

If true, id prefer it didn't happen as the total cost of politics is too high, e.g £74k salary plus and other £135k on staff to support the MP before all the other things are added in.
You then look at other aspects such as the spam pushed through our letter boxes, why couldn't they get a local printing company and at least a local business is getting the benefit or Cllr Maguire going on about "silicon sands", she could maybe start the trend off by moving her own businesses to Southport?

Whilst this is a splendid romantic notion, it makes no more practical or commercial sense than the Lib Dems' other idea - a railway line from the Pier to Asda.

Sadly raising false hopes. No substance as usual!

It would cost 1.3 Billion the scheme in Swansea, put another 2 billion on top in relasitic terms. Southport??? God knows the cost
My ashes will be well and truely spread around before this ever happens off our coast.
Good idea but not pratical for decades.

One issue I haven't seen an explanation of as yet is whether this will be a permanent lagoon i.e. it will only 'drain' and produce electricity to meet peak demands?
OR will it ebb and flow with the tide producing electricity on the 'inflow and outflow'?
Why's this important?
If the former do the residents of Southport want a 'massive' new Marine Lake that barely drains. It's hioghly likely to have a significant environmental impact on drainage in Southport!
If the latter, it'll have a significant detrimental impact on National Grid's balancing to the point of being a distinct problem for them. The project would be unviable for generation purposes and is likely to be nothing more than a white elephant as a result of the Capacity Market.
