A565 Southport New Road – installation nearly complete on original route. Testing and configuration will be put on hold to tie in with the extension of the route. Permits to begin installation of the extended section have been submitted but no dates for the ground works to begin have been confirmed. No enforcement date has been set yet for this route.

    Update: Average speed camera scheme

AT THE beginning of the year it was announced by the Lancashire Road Safety Partnership that eight routes across Lancashire would be installed with average speed cameras in a bid to reduce road casualties.

One of the average speed routes, the A6 London Road in Preston, went live in March and a further three routes (A657 in Belmont, A565 Southport New Road and A588 Head Dyke Lane) are nearing completion but no firm enforcement dates have been set.

Work is yet to begin on the remaining four routes (B6232 Grane Road, A682 Gisburn Road, A59 Brockholes Brow and A583 Preston New Road) but all are expected to be completed by the end of 2017.

Whilst work has progressed this year, some changes to the initial plans for two of the routes have been reviewed and will now be carried out.

Due to a temporary speed restriction implemented by Lancashire County Council on a section of the A583 Preston New Road, the camera locations have been revised and changes will be made to shorten the route.

Cameras will now cover the A583 Preston New Road (3 miles) between Wrea Green roundabout, through Kirkham bypass to Newton-with-Scales, west of Clifton.

Due to the reduction on the A583 route and a review of casualty data and feedback from local residents, the A565 Southport New Road average speed camera scheme will be extended.

The additional cameras will be installed in the coming weeks, extending the route from Mere Brow through Holmes to the Tarleton crossroads. The route will now cover 3.7 miles.

More information about the average speed cameras can be found on the constabulary website: http://www.lancashire.police.uk/help...speed-cameras/

I remember watching an episode of Dr Who once were everyone just sat in their cars going round at the same speed all the time. Why are we bothering to produce cars capable of twice the speed limit when all they want us to do is keep to ****** 20mph, oh and rape us of fines!!

Just another Lancs CC scheme to deter visitors coming to Southport, Sefton whilst Blackpool is served by highly convenient road infrastructure and parking. It's also a major inconvenience to Southport, Merseyside residents commuting out of the borough as it's a money making 'scam' and has nothing to do with safety given the cameras aren't cited at accident blackspots!

Have you seen how many Speed Cameras there are on the way to Blackpool?
Also a large part of the route is now to have average speed cameras.

On ever so slight difference though, Blackpool is served by the M55 with a 70mph route. The other routes are single carriageways with 50 mph limits and 30mph in built-up areas.

Southport is served by one single carriageway from Ormskirk with a majority 30mph limit, one dual-carriageway from Liverpool where the speed limit has been reduced from 70mph to 60mph and now the dual-carriageway from Tarleton has been reduced from 70mph to 50mph! All designed to 'reduce' the appeal of Southport to visitors in favour of Blackpool and Liverpool. Road safety has nothing to do with it, if it did the accident black-spot at Moss-Hey Lane would have been shut years ago..........

In your dreams! You're obviously a Left-wing Lancs CC Troll.........
Why hasn't Southport been connected to the Motorway network like Blackpool? Because.... Current bank holiday travel times for the last five miles into Southport exceed 65 mins, proven! So before you criticise others, and the possible motives of the "Loony Left-wing" councils to the North and South, understand the dynamics of the utterly 'sh**e' road infrastructure purposefully caused by the 'distant' useless tin-pot politicians! After all we live here and know how ridiculously slow it is to go anywhere else when we want a day out..............
You 'muppet'! It's nothing to do with road safety at all, all to do with 'tax' and make Southport unappealing to visitors......

    Really? Which stretches are 30mph?

So the Formby by-pass has a different speed limit depending on which direction you're travelling in does it?

    As others have said. Bollox.

Yes, the speed limit comimg into town drops to 50 by the Airfield gates but in the out of town direction is 60.

LOL you are funny. Odd, but funny.

What a surprise. How convenient that all the speed limits have recently aligned...

This is frankly just a massive abuse of power - imposing insanely draconian speed limits on hundreds of thousands of citizens without even bothering to justify or explain why.

Back in January the press release said that existing speed limits would be retained, with the chief police officer saying 'journey times will not increase'. There has been no explanation for the apparently sudden need to massively reduce the limit from 70 to 50. Why, exactly, have they not tried enforcing the existing 70 mph limit with the cameras first, as promised? How have they arrived at 50 mph as the maximum safe speed - where are the careful calculations to support this? (spoiler alert - there won't be any. Speed limits are now set at what they think the market will stand).

Sure, there have been a handful of deaths on this stretch in recent years - but what about the context? Have deaths and injuries been increasing or decreasing? Detailed location-specific KSI figures are now very hard for us plebs to find, but I strongly suspect there has been a steady decrease in accidents. What are the actual accident figures and how many were related to people driving over 70mph?

What about consideration of the 'cost' in the cost-benefit anaysis? Was an analysis even done? Should hundreds of thousands of people be unnecessarily inconvenienced for the sake of possibly preventing a small number of accidents - where is the cost-benefit analysis for the hundreds of thousands of hours lost, and congestion caused? What about the cost to trust in speed limits, the police and authority in general when people are forced to drive far slower than they know to be safe?

Once you establish a speed camera partnership, those in charge have to continually justify their own existence, which means there will never be 'enough' control of the public on the roads. All we can look forward to is more and more restrictions, with increasingly diminishing returns. Lancashire Council has a track record here - they've reduced hundreds of speed limits around the county in recent years. And by pure coincidence they rake in millions in fees for speed awareness courses.

So in summary, they want us to sit back and accept that - as our reward for driving more safely over previous years - we must now endure further sanctions and a frustrating and unnecessarily slow journey every single day of our lives. All in the interests of chasing an unobtainable target of zero deaths and injuries.

Whatever happened to 'Policing by Consent'....

I can tell you that the KSI figures do not support this initiative.

    It is all about money!
