So what other route do you use to go North out of Southport? It must be one I don't know, as I'm sure this is still by far the shortest/fastest.
And its not even a few minutes:

From Banks roundabout to Tarleton traffic lights is 4.4 miles
Driving at 49 mph will take 5.39 minutes
Exceeding the limit but within the suggested "tollerated" 57 mph will take 4.63 minutes

That means they would get to the lights just 45 seconds earlier. Or put it another way, when they are at the lights everyone else driving within the speed limit will be at the Garden Centres, just 700m behind !

    Every second counts 🎣

There really are some self righteous folk on here. The road is no safer now than it has been for the past 30+ years I’ve driven it. In fact it feels less safe because, for example, people don’t seem to dare move out of the near side lane to let others out at the various junctions. I don’t condone excessive speedsters but what I don’t agree with is the authorities targeting innocuous areas where they can maximise on revenue with that yellow van, rather than focusing on making more notorious black spots safer.

I agree - you could have a speed limit of 5mph and still get accidents !

Anyway they haven't exactly paid attention to the speed limit signs along the road. If you look you will see it is 50mph up until the end of the average cameras - then it switches to the national speed limit for a few metres or so before switching again to 40mph over the bridge. Once round that bend the limit goes up again.

Why not just have it set to 50mph until after the bridge ??

It is a nice road to drive along, always has been. The same goes for the Formby bypass. However all the accidents on these two roads are almost exclusively related to the junctions along them ! If they want to improve safety they really need to look at the road layouts - not the speeds ! Same with the coast road - the accidents there are almost always to do with unsafe over taking !

What do you expect - it's Lancashire and their over zealous, arrogant and unforgiving police force and petty council. These cameras are just a money making scam and absolutely NOTHING to do with safety as the figures obtained verify! It's about time plod did what they are supposed to do and fight crime not just getting easy motoring targets probably because they are absolutely useless at any other form of crime fighting.

Roughly1690 folk caught doing a speed that was deemed perfectly safe until a few weeks ago, and one numpty who clearly would disregard any speed limit set.

As someone who uses this stretch of road 6-8 times daily, there's been no noticable imporovement in safety, it just takes longer to get past dawdlers. Infuriating exercise.

Nothing to do with being self righteous, If your stupid enough to speed in an average speed area you stupid enough to pay the stupidity fine. Simple as that.

As for not being safer, The fact people could stick to the sorter 50mph zones has caused the whole stretch to be made a 50 average zone. So you can blame the drivers that could slow down for half a mile or so at the accident black spots.

One area I've noticed it make a massive difference is on motorways. No longer do you have ********s doing 80-90 in work areas just to slam the brakes on for spot speed cameras. There is a constant 50mph through the whole zone now. Yes is does slow you down in your little tin box, but it also keeps others safe.

The police are missing a fortune in fines due to allowing insane drivers to rip along the Formby bypass past RAF Woodvale, at massive speeds.

Some cars and motorcycles clearly travel in excess of 100 mph along that stretch.

Awww, do you like a good speed down the Tarleton bypass?
50mph to slow for you in an accident hot spot?

The ONLY thing people are really moaning about is that this actually works at slowing down traffic. So I guess it's doing what it set out to do.

It's becoming more & more obvious Ceam that you've found some of the 1691 judging by the ludicrous remarks they make.

If I had a clue what that was meant to mean, I may stand a better chance of giving a decent response.

AWWW no, Accident hot spot well it wasn't like that when I started driving back in 78!!! Its crap driving that's the real issue. However since you are a God like creature I bow down to your superior intellect. Oh yes the 1691 are the number caught speeding keep up or in your case slow down. LOL

Come on, accident hot spot, not at all, the thing is sure I stick to the limit simply because I have no intention of contributing to anyone's coffers, but I personally see no sound reason for the limit on this road, beyond of course money making.

Can also add that on an open road would expect to be able to drive in the top and most economical gear on my car, at 50mph in 6th gear the car is on tick over only and certainly not running freely, whereas at say 60mph the engine runs easily, my fuel usage and logically emissions are at their lowest, what you have now is virtually a single lane procession.
