Following the 18th earthquake within 12 days at the controversial Preston New Road fracking site, Lancashire County Council's Labour group is calling for it to be suspended by the government.

Despite claims by Cuadrilla, trying to play down these seismic events as just 'micro.' Caudrilla have stopped fracking for short periods following some of the earthquakes only to start up again with a few days; however this self-regulation does not appear to be reducing the size or frequency of these events.

The Labour Group has put forward the following motion for the next full council: 'We call upon the Chief Executive to write to the Prime Minister on behalf of Lancashire County Council requesting that:

    1) Fracking on the Preston New Road site is suspended by order of the government.
    2) An independent enquiry investigates the Earthquakes being felt within the local area.
    3) That fracking is suspended in Lancashire until the independent enquiry publishes its findings.'

Yesterday, Ormskirk County Councillor John Fillis, Labour Deputy Leader told QLocal: "These earthquakes were not happening before drilling started so clearly there is a link with the fracking on this site. Fracking was shut down at the previous fracking site near Blackpool due to earthquakes. It was claimed that these problems had been overcome and it was now safe. It would appear that such claims by Quadrilla are neither sound nor reliable.

"The government which overturned Lancashire County Council's decision to refuse fracking at the Preston New Road site now have to take on this responsibility, and has a duty to protect local people and suspend fracking not only on this site but across the county.

"We need an independent enquiry as under self-regulation these seismic events have increased in size and frequency, with Cuadrilla putting profits before the safety of local people. In order to assure local people fracking should be suspended until the enquiry report has been published to enable everyone to consider its findings.

"This is not just about the Preston New Road site. The government is supporting fracking right across Lancashire and is consulting on changing planning laws to prevent local people and councils from blocking these developments.

"The people of Lancashire deserve answers to their genuine concerns."

    Is Blackpool still there ?

    earthquake
    /ˈəːθkweɪk/Submit
    noun
a sudden violent shaking of the ground, typically causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the earth's crust or volcanic action.
synonyms: earth tremor, tremor, convulsion, shock, foreshock, aftershock; More
    a great upheaval.
    "a political earthquake"

    It is probably time for them to read up on seismic events in the country before making fools of themselves publishing such nonsense;

Although on reading the data the residents of ffestiniog, notts and Lochend in the highlands need to pack their bags before the Labour battle bus arrives to take them away.

Coal mining created and continues to create small earth tremors. Quarrying does the same, the pile driving on the building site at Kew causes tremors - any activity involving heavy earth work does. Throw a stone into water and it causes ripples!

No-one knows whether the site is profitable as yet, if it is then - negligible tremors would be forgotten as annual fuel bills reduce in cost.

Ban it now before they destroy our environment and waste any more money. And at this rate we’re going to be here a long long time before we see them make any progress. 3 stoppages in one week? Bungling idiots.

If you believe that fuel bills will reduce if fracking is successful is as much pie in the sky as the ACTUAL announcement that the introduction of nuclear energy would make electricity so cheap that it would be scarcely worth while sending out bills.
I am more concerned about the high risk fracking puts onto our underground water sources.

Well tell us what the alternative is, are you in contact with your sources in Russia as to whether or not they will put the price of gas up or even turn it off to punish us for highlighting their murderous dealings in other Countries. You lot make me laugh you don't want it but offer no solution but you know EVERYTHING about it. (or you think you do)

Personally I couldn’t give a f*** about fuel bills. I’m far more concerned about this planet that were wrecking and the legacy were leaving our children and grandchildren.

Nuclear Energy is created on British Soil. Much of our domestic fuel is imported, the greatest percentage is from Russia, supplied under Russian legislation. If we can be self dependent on this fuel there would be no import costs and our own government would set the tariffs according to the level of the economy in the UK. Talking of Russia - they are at present negotiating agreements for taking over our Nuclear plants.

What are these high risks to our water sources? Contamination? Unlikely, but by a rare chance, the chemicals introduced into the water already exist in our foods and drink now. Those same water sources would also be used by the fracking company personnel themselves - would they be likely to create any harm to themselves? You only know of these tremors because the fracking company practices strict monitoring and release that information to the public - would they do so freely if they were creating some sort of crisis?

Fracking takes place within the Earth's crust. As you stand on the ground in the UK, that crust is approximately 25 miles thick, then you reach the mantle and other layers. The fracking mines are at a depth of 1.6 miles - that is less than 0.2% of the Earths crust. To give you some idea of the threat posed - the deepest gold mine in the World is more than double that depth! Coal mines also produced Earth tremors.

It is blindingly obvious that the fracking and tremors are linked, however a bit of reality please, I have no doubt whatsoever that these same monitoring devices would go off scale if set up by a main rd or rail line.

If we can extract this gas safely we should do so, if only for our own independent supply, all the greenies can howl, wail and moan as much as they like, currently so called green energy can't come close to providing constant supply, like it or not we still need "fossil" fuels.

I think most of if not all of us would love to see our energy come from a few solar panels, some windmills gently turning in the breeze, turbines working on water flowing down hill, the reality is solar panels and wind farms covering acres of ground, hydro power small and all totally dependent on the weather, we have a situation were even coal fired plants are still held on standby to step in when needed.

How many realise what standby means, these plants can't be brought into operation just by pushing a button, they have to kept fully functional, fully manned, boilers still hot, even when not producing power.
