is £70 a fair deal?
Hi,
just wondered anyone is kind enough to make a comment on the cost of the following jobs:
* replacing existing silicone on TWO standard baths ( the top end where the tap is and the length of the bath by the wall )
* fixing a cupboard door hinge ( the exisiting hinge has been moved slightly higher up to a different location as the old position was not suitable to have wood filler )
Altogether £70 ( no more than an hour spent on all three jobs)
( got quoted £35 for fixing door hinge, was quoted £35 to replace one bath silicone - was willing to include a second bath after being questioned )
Thank you,

What do you think is a reasonable price for someone to come out to your house and do the work?

It might take him an hour to get the old silicone off 2 baths and the surfaces clean and fiddling around trying to re fit what sounds like an already snapped off and repositioned cupboard hinge might take more effort than you think, £70 all thing considered sounds fair enough

I aiso had the loft insulated the other week.
The total area is about 100 meters.
The guy said his fee by the energy company is £50.
He was here for 3 hours . He had to carry all rolls of materials up by himself and all the bending and cutting he did up the loft by himself too.
all that loft insulation for £ 50, compared with the £70 ( 1 hour spent in total ) for the other three jobs I had done yesterday. i think the loft man needs to reconsider his career maybe, into a jack of all trades instead.

It is the removal and cleaning of the existing silicone that is a pig. This can take more than an hour. Replacing it is not problem and changing a hinge is no problem. Consider a call out charge (the guy has to travel from where ever) £20 - chemicals for removing existing silicone and time involved £25, replacing new silicone (good stuff costs around £7) and time, £12. Replacing a hinge is not just removing a hinge and putting in a new one - the door has to be re-aligned and balanced. Also remember, that because the guy is being paid to do the work he becomes responsible - I reckon it is a fair price, obviously a lot cheaper if you did it yourself.

For the three jobs it would depend on whether you are supplying the materials - silicon etc. Also, the bath should be full when doing these jobs so that takes time up, if it's like mine then that could be twenty minutes per bath, lol.
As for the loft insulation, the guy doing this will be paid prob avg national wage at under £10 p/h and the energy company will have been subsidised by the government to insulate your loft so in effect they will be paid twice.
The £50 is not going straight into the pocket of the guy doing the work, he is not self-employed and so the two variables are not comparable.

You might think getting a professional in to do a job is expensive but it's cheap when viewed against how expensive it can end up when you get an amateur in!

your bath may need filling up - but mine does not. It is cast iron and needs four men to lift it.

Did you get a receipt for your £50 as it sounds like you got a grant for your loft insulation that comes with free fitting.
Maybe the guy isn't in the wrong game if his job is to fit insulation and he is taking £50 off everyone aswell.
Oh hang on I read it wrong, still, he is not doing so bad at £50 a pop and should be able to do an average house in 2 hours putting him on £25 an hour, pretty much the same as the bath guy.
