Put my room fan on earlier in the week - completely useless! Obviously, it was throwing out the same warm air that surrounded it.

This might sound stupid but I know people who have done this before. If it is a ceiling fan are you sure it is turning in the right direction? Most ceiling fans have a switch to control the direction of rotation. In the summer the fan should be turning counter-clockwise as you look at it from below otherwise you will feel no effect. You should be feeling a "wind chill" effect if it's working. Just a thought...
    Take care out there

one tip is to shut the curtains or blinds if the sun is directly on the room, it will keep the heat out.

Good tip! We have very hot/humid Summers, and, even though we have central air conditioning (a must over here), I still try to keep the house as cool as possible to save the AC running its *** off!

Apart from closing blinds/curtains, open your windows first thing in the morning when it's cool. As soon as it starts to heat up outside, close them. At night when it's cooled off, open them again.

The number of people leaving car windows open to keep a car cool is amazing - even when items are left in the cars??

With windows I leave the front ones open and the rear ones as well which creates a draught of air - obviously locking them when I go out or go to bed. Many of the Supermarkets have problems with air conditioning/heating units as they get blocked up and then break down completely. We have had Canadians stay over with us who found the air pollution in the UK combined with the damp weather, difficult to deal with. These conditions create more particulates to form on unused surfaces such as fan blades etc.,
