    Wouldn't it make more sense

One of the greatest complaints of modern times is that there is a lack of space for cars to park, either outside private houses or in town itself.

The reason for this is that when the roads were built, they were planned in accordance with the conditions at that time. Fewer people owned cars, industry was on a smaller scale - there were smaller and less deliveries, there were no motorways and there were fewer vehicles on the roads.

Today, almost everyone owns one vehicle at least, in many households there are two or even three or more vehicles used for commuting to and from work. So why are contractor's allowed to build estates of houses, with the same width of road as in the past, with very little space for cars to park?

Wouldn't it make more sense to plan new developments in accordance with today's situation?

Houses are available with garages and offroad parking in Southport for the price of a semi down here. If its important to you, just get a bigger house.

    Better in Japan

Buy a car in Japan, you have to provide evidence of an off-road parking space for it first.....The way car ownership's growing here, same rule may have to be introduced in the UK.

There are houses being built with garages - true! You could get a smart car in one of them. But the drive ways are suitable for one car, two if they are small cars, and parking on the road is not an option as the roads are the same width as in the past. In Kew for instance, the housing estate that is in progress now will soon have a major road running through it complete with buses etc.,and the road is no wider than existing roads in Southport.

well given the legislation coming in with regards to on road parking, and not half on off the pavement.theres going to be some fun and games, with access for services ,and traffic flow, verses pedestrian flow on the pavements,to come, unless its thought through realistically.

I like the new designs of house or flat built with a drive under garage.

We have no road parking or even a pavement.
Delivery vans have to pull in the drive or block the road.
