    Why is

Why is there more money spent on public walks, cycle lanes and beaches South of Formby than there is spent on the North side of Formby?

Because the south side of Formby is bigger than the North side of Formby?

    To encourage the indolent?
Orwell said "If there is hope, it lies in the proles." Whilst champagne socialists see diversity idealised at university, the common folk experience it first hand in their neighbour hoods.

I have not got a clue to the actual figures - but just by looking at these areas it is blatantly clear! Public walks? are walkways through nature reserves etc., that are used by the public.

This side of Formby - public paths and cycle paths are very rough with many potholes, muddy puddles and well overgrown, or full of loose sharp chippings, or just uneven tracks. On the far side of Formby, heading toward Hightown and Crosby, public paths are properly fenced, with trimmed hedges and wide smooth by-ways, they are also well sign posted. It is a similar story going up to Waterloo. I have only checked out the pathways to Bootle alongside the canal as yet - I have not followed the cycle paths there. From Liverpool city, Otterspool to Aigburth, again fine walkways and cycle paths.

As for beaches - there is a narrow walkway mostly clear of black mud out to the tide line at Southport, and the beach cannot be seen from the coastal road - but Crosby beach is lovely, clean with a huge stretch of golden sand. An open promenade walk, and lovely greens close by.

    Get the idea?

Well if you have no figures it rather renders your opening post meangingless. You also didn't mention which overall areas you were referring to when you referred to north of Formby and south of Formby - ie Sefton? Merseyside? England? The World?. From your latest post from the places you refer to I presume you mean Merseyside. Well as someone has already pointed out Merseyside south of Formby is much larger than Merseyside north of Formby (more than 10 times the size in square mileage).

I'd expect public paths through nature reserves to be rough. Who wants to see tarmaced paths in nature reserves? Where are the nature reserves south of Formby?

The cycle paths north of Formby ie the coast road, Cheshire Lines path and through the pinewoods to Freshfield have been in place for several decades whilst the cycle paths from Formby to Hightown and on to Blundellsands were only laid out in the last decade so perhaps that is why they look in better condition. The path between Formby and Hightown is properly fenced because it has a railway line on one side and a Ministry of Defence firing range on the other. It would be rather foolish not to have them properly fenced. There is no such requirement for the paths north of Formby to be fenced in and it would rather ruin the enjoyment of them if they were.

You can't see the beach from the Southport coastal road because of the sand dunes - do you want them flattening? The beach is perfectly visible and accessible from Marine Drive and the sea wall however. There's a perfectly fine Promenade and gardens in Southport, the fact the sea has retreated from it over the centuries is hardly something that public expenditure could have prevented. Is the sea wall not an adequate point for a sea front walk? Why would you need a walkway out to the tide line? Just walk across the beach.

The last time I cycled from Southport to Crosby the final stretch along the promenade to Waterloo was impassable as it was covered with deep wind blown sand.

What I don't understand is, that if all this money is being spent out of this town and this town is such a run down ***** hole, Why don't the people that don't like it move to these amazing areas of Merseyside?

Don't worry I do know the answer really. Shame the moaners don't recognize the fact this is an amazing town. Going through the same difficulties every town and council are going through.

Ha!Ha! When I was young, not so long ago - I was a fan of Cowboy films. I had never heard of Bootle, but when I was informed that there was a place down the line called this I immediately thought people meant Boot Hill, as in the cowboy films. Seems to fit well now though.

Yes, but with the added lack of imagination by town planning and diverted expenditure. Southport generates more funding than most of the other areas of Sefton. With wise planning Southport could be made even more profitable by spending out on its natural features to attract more people to the area. Given two options for a choice of a day out - would you choose Bootle or Southport? But for some unfathomable reason more money is spent on Bootle!

Live in Southport, work in Bootle and regularly get out and about at all points in between and beyond.
If you think more money is spent attracting visitors to Bootle than Southport please do advise what it's been spent on?
And why the obsession only with Bootle?
There are other towns in Sefton you know.
