    Traffic Lights At The Monument

Who is in charge of the maintenance of these lights as I presume that they are broke as every time the lights change sequence the green man lights up, even when there is no-one around the press the button.

Are they broke or are they set up this way?

Would it be green for half the road if the lanes are filtered?

They have been like that for a few weeks, noticed when taxi driving at nights, that at every change the pedestrian crossing lights are working, and like you said, there are no pedestrians around, especially after 2.00am at that end of town, sometimes the lights at the Scarisbrick Hotel do the same, gets annoying after waiting a few times, almost every time you have to wait. The sequences do need altering,or even turn the lights off after a certain time,as they do that in some towns when the traffic is minimal.

The last set of lights at Woodvale at start of Formby bypass have had an intermittent fault for a long time......Suddenly changing to red to let 'ghost cars' out of the road from the Sparrowhawk.

Set up that way. First Lord St on green, then Nevill /London St, then green man for pedestrians.

Though it does seem to change that sequence later at night.

Most sets of lights are set up that way - to let cyclists out.

The worst thing about these lights is that when some people are walking down Lord Street near the lights, they see the green man lit and then decide they want to cross over, but as they start crossing the green man changes to red and these people are then stuck in no mans land causing cars to wait even longer.

They're probably set up this way for 'health and safety' reasons as not every set of lights in Southport with a crossing on change to the green man likes these do.

Not every set sure, but a lot of them are, one of the worst is Churchtown, you have time to give the car a service wash during the all red phase, whether there are pedestrians about or not.

Don't forget the flashing light trick at night !!

Some lights switch to sensors at night. Therefore if you are stuck at a red or are approaching a red light at night and the junction is clear - try flashing your high beams at the lights. This triggers the sensor and the lights will change to green.

It doesn't work for all lights but does work for a large amount !!

This was a tip passed on by a mechanic many years ago and after a lot of testing i can confirm it does work !

    No it doesn't.

I do laugh when I see car drivers try this.

A traffic light will change either by sensors embedded in the road or after certain period of time.

Which brings me to another question. One week a set of lights (noticeable during the early hours) will change when it senses a car then the next week they will only change after a certain period of time sat waiting.

Traffic lights seemed okay tonight at the monument, somebody must have altered the timings of the changing sequence during the day.Hopefully they will remain that way,as they were a nuisance during the night.

They were back to their normal selves last night, green light for Lord Street, then green light for Nevill Street, then the green man, then the wait button on the crossing lights up and then back to green light for Lord Street.

I also noticed that the lights at the Scarisbrick Hotel have changed to timed instead of working on a sensor.

Thought councils were trying to stop emissions from vehicles engines from building up in towns ? Obviously this council is'nt bothered, with vehicles waiting, sometimes building up into very long, and sometimes waiting in unnecessary queues on the roads, and the continual building of traffic calming ramps in built up areas, where they are NOT needed, and 20 MPH on nearly every street or road, with the recent Fleetwood Road reduction being a prime example of this.

Back to the usual delays at both the Monument, and Scarisbrick Hotel traffic lights again, obviously they had'nt been adjusted as I first thought,as posted and previously........oh well.

    A) They would not be needed if people drove within the speed limits. Unfortunately, with so many prepared to ignore limits, what other alternative is there apart from installing speed cameras every few hundred metres?

    B) Road users come in all shapes and sizes, inc young kids, creaky old folk on foot, drunks, cyclists, leccy-buggy pilots, horseriders, etc. It is to reduce the damage done to vulnerable users when accidents happen, that 20mph limits have been introduced.

A slight increase in emissions is a small price to pay for safer streets. And a safer environment encourages more to walk/cycle rather than drive, if they feel it's safe enough out there....leading to less emissions.
