Branson's Virgin has been publicly subsidised for years for his 140mph trains only being able to run at 125mph.
sf and I strayed to a general topic.
I found this is interesting and informative.

As a child I remember the soot blackened houses and walls around Southport railway Station.
I think that was more to do with coal rather than anything else, they still are dirty disgusting places when you've diesels spewing out fumes.

I think you should know a lot of self made real job have not to have it all
change alliance to Tory once they start paying half their total earnings and profit on tax.
You misread me totally, no problem with an individual or company of whatever size which produces goods or provides a valued service, totally opposed to the glad handing of our public sector operations to the financiers, hedge fund cowboys, and the out of country money men.
Most public sector operations are a monopoly by virtue of what they do, handing monopolies to the financial sharks is like turning the fox loose in the chicken run, the fox will prosper, but the devastation left behind is not good.
Yet another case ongoing at the moment regarding construction of a solar farm, the whole affair is proving to be yet another example of dodgy accounting at best, or illegal activity at worst.
The set up was one original contractor, who allocated the subcontracting to an "umbrella" company, who in turn then used an agency to take on the self employed workers who did the actual work, in most cases these were small construction companies or individual workers, the agency in turn engaged a payroll company to oversee payments to the workers, net result the workers have not been paid, everyone else denies responsibility, yet amazingly the prime front people have all been paid.
One small construction company is owed £160,000, has had to lay off staff and is struggling to stay afloat, individual workers owed sums varying from £5,000 up to £40,000.
That is naked profiteering capitalism at work, personally I would ban "umbrella" companies, payroll companies, not over fond of agencies either, many of those unpaid don't know who they were actually working for thanks to the multilayered set up.

I'm going to the champions league final, and I am struggling how to get there. I am contemplating getting the train from Lviv to Kiev. The train refurn is 1080km in total and it costs £8.
Yes 8 pounds.

I agree with banning 'umbrella' companies.

Definitely! Agencies as well! Everyone needs to know who they are dealing with and if the companies are completely honest, there should be no problems.

Thanks I'm really worried about getting there
It seems impossible at the moment. Staying is doesn't seem like an option at present. the hostels aren £300 a night, and 2 star hotels are going for 1400 a night. I'm not going to get ripped off like that.

Book a flight outside of the UK i.e Amsterdam. Take a flight from UK to Amsterdam and fly direct. Lot cheaper. Check out Belgium, Austria as well.
Amsterdam = £460. Four nights. Hotel Dnipro £50 a night.

Another day of shame for Northern yesterday with many services not running including 3 on the trot towards Southport, Blackpool services also suffered. Trains cancelled at the last minute others cancelled then reinstated but departure boards not updated, staff not informed or misinformed making them look like idiots. Time overdue to call time on this bunch of cowboys.

Timetables SHOULD be available by 1st June, notices all over Victoria stating posters will be displayed 'When available'.
No, Timetables should have been available well in advance and the posters should have been available on the day!
They couldn't run a bath never mind a railway!

So, in general, everyone is for re-nationalising British Rail then?

Without any shadow of doubt, the railways in this country should be re-nationalised. The current franchise system of privatisation isn't fit for purpose. The majority of investment into the railway industry comes from us - the taxpayers - and we are also heavily subsidising the train operating companies who are laughing all the way to the bank.
It is wrong to compare the quality of service to the days when we had British Railways and steam trains. Technology has come on leaps and bounds yet the operation of today's franchised railways is still costing the taxpayer more now - in real terms - than it ever did when the railways were publicly owned.
