Heard today it has been bought and is going to be turned into a gym.

Great that it is going to be something.... but aren't we already a bit overloaded with gyms - with everything from a fiver a month places to all hours and mega spendy?

Perhaps all the previous MacDonald fast food customers will sign on for it? Southport is really becoming a shopper's paradise, Nail Salons, Hairdressers, Gyms, Barbers and Coffee shops. There must be at least fifty gyms in and around the area now and none of them appear to have many customers apart from one.

This has got to be the most ‘glass half empty’ forum on the Internet.

Somebody wants to do something with a building boarded up for years, create jobs and invest in the local economy and all people on here do is ***** and complain. No wonder the forum has died a death.

It can be quite painfull sometimes reading the posts from Jurassic Shopping World.
Shopping habits are changing but some of the dinosaurs posting on here won't or can't accept that.
It seems to me eminently sensible to give punters what they do want, instead of trying to foist onto them what others think or insist they want.

Surprisingly yes, if you Google 'gyms in Sefton, it seems there are over 50, and it looks like over 20 just in Southport (gyms and fitness type places)

Oh, Come on! Surely you have seen all the almost empty gyms around the town? It takes imagination to be able to market a realistic enterprise and considering the direction the market is heading at present there seems to be too little of that around. If people are really serious in creating a successful business, to employ a number of local people, generate sufficient profits to pay the taxes etc., then they should also have the business acumen to study trends. A gym just not do that!
Still a town of businesses that are open and of little interest to most people, is better than a town of closed shops - at least the council makes some money on them.

When the McDonalds closed after many years of (presumably) successful trading, I felt sure it would re-open as a Burger King.

I was surprised that a place the size of Southport doesn't have a BK, but I've heard (nudge nudge) that they and McD have a cosy arrangement not to tread on each other's toes, and as McD have two large outlets here (albeit out of town) BK have not pursued it.

Having said that, perhaps BK did research it, and felt that their staff wouldn't want to deal with the gangs of pond life on Eastbank Street.

There are nearby towns and cities that have MacDonalds and Burger Kings within spitting distance of each other. Why would they conspire not to compete with each other in Southport.
I suppose it makes a change from the usual ludicrous theory that Maccies have been bribing the entire council and every governemnt for the last 40 years to keep BK out of Southport.

Fact is BK is a franchise. If you want to open one you can, but you'll need a lot of money to do so.
