    The Old Duke/Mad Duke

I see the signs have gone up at the new Marston's pub by Tesco and it is now being called The Old Duke rather than The Mad Duke as originally announced. The Mad Duke was the nickname of the founder of Southport William "Duke" Sutton.

    I am glad.
Sometimes tradition has to move with public opinion pushing for sympathetic terminology in mental illness.

They can still sell mad cow burgers.

I'm not - yet another example of pandering to the 'terminally offended.'

Looks like it should be a decent sort of place. No issues with their plans for offering food etc, but reservations about siting a pub in such a conspic location right on the main road in/out of town....Same reservations re petrol stations all selling alcohol, it shouldn't be allowed.

Imo, putting temptation right under the nose of people driving is a bad idea. More than a few obviously do, going by the 'empties' strewn along out of town grass verges.

William Sutton was not mad from affliction or disease.
It seems he got the title for being a forward thinking entrepreneur.

Thanks Hamble. I definitely wouldn't be happy with it being called The Mad Duke on the basis of this evidence. As you say, he was forward thinking and responsible for creating Southport as a resort. The Old Duke is much more respectful
