I have just found an interesting site. Pre- decimalisation! If you spent 15s.6p in a shop, what denomination of payment would you have used, what note could you have offered to receive change and how much change would you have received. No trick! Just to see if anyone knows or remembers.

Not being picky... but it would have been 15s 6d. "p" wasn't used for pence.

You could have paid with a 10 shilling note, 2 half crowns, and 6 pennies

A pound note. You would get 4s 6d change.

P.S. I had to edit your thread title to get rid of the exclamation marks. Damned Sucuri firewall is still blocking certain characters and the thread wouldn't open.

Thank you for doing that - I keep forgetting. You are quite right, I did get the p wrong. I bet it made you think for a bit though.

Or 2 sixpenny bits instead of a shilling. The permutations are endless!

Funnily enough it just came to me immediately. £sd were in use for most of the time I lived in the UK.

When I first started work there was one adding machine in the office. Being a junior meant I was low in the pecking order and rarely got first dibs on it. I used to add the ledgers manually, which, under £sd meant 3 columns. I doubt I could race through it now, but I used to be like lightening and rarely made errors.

This nostalgia thing can get very silly - the other week I paid for something with a bushel of corn and had a very sticky time of it on the bus home. My change wasn't allowed on the seats and I struggled to sweep the feathers under my seat with a pointy felt boot.

And dangerous if used to idealise the past. Today's politicians have used it with great success. Trump with his "Make America Great Again". UKIPs' "We want our country back" and the pro-Brexit "Take back control". Nostalgia for a non existent utopian past.
