Last week I went online, not only to see what you premier posters where pressing but also to buy some clothes as Mrs TownieChap was still in a mood about the unfortunate commode episode and refused to go out and buy me some gear (who knows, if she had gone to taskers it might still be open). I spent £50 on a popular clothing website and for that I got an entire new set off clothes from head to-toe. I could not of got such a great deal on the high street so it really does not please me to say this at all, but why go to the shops when you can make a very considerable saving by shopping online, it's a no brainer... it must be because I've worked it out. RIP Shops

Taskers
Taskers closed 2 months ago, never opened for ages. Was neither use or ornament when it was there, only sold a few lines of things for certain sports.
As for The Chase, that was originally on Eastbank St and moved to Chapel St but it took ages to open up, it had a poster on the window saying "Opening Soon" and now it's closing.

From recollection they've been in Marble Place and 2 sites on Chapel Street in the last 18 months. Wouldn't be surprised to see them pop up somewhere else in town.

Yes, I seem to remember them being on the same stretch as that little newsagents which opens when they feel like it just opposite where Shoe Zone was....

The vast majority of town centres are the same. The only ones who seem to be able to buck the trend are the likes of Lytham which offers unique, boutique style shops that are an attraction in themselves. Why bother going into town where you'll have to pay for parking or for public transport when all the shops are chains which you can order from online and often get free p&p and returns? (Yes, I know, I'd rather try things on to ensure that they fit, but you get my point)
Vastly reducing or completely removing parking charges is the only thing that will prevent the further decline of the town centre, so expect to see the tumbleweeds blowing through very soon. The Council will only make a lame attempt at acting on the problem when their income from parking nosedives because there's nothing left to go into town for.
I'm only happy when it rains....

Would that really make much difference? There's only a couple of hundred on-street spaces in town centre, and they get full pretty quick as it is.
While on the subject, when did the Council ever 'do' someone for misuse of a Blue Badge? Almost every third parked car displays one.....Must be a great temptation for family members to 'borrow' grannys badge for free trips to the shops.

The Chase, is that the foreign owned shop that reported an alleged gun attack? They keep on moving all around town - it is like musical shops. Is this a tax scam?

I have repeatedly said the same about towns across the UK. They are all clones of one another and have nothing different to offer to shoppers. This appears to be the designs for Southport - what a terrible mistake that would be!
On a visit to Tring, in the South East UK - there are some lovely individual shops selling all kinds of items and enjoying a busy time with many shoppers. An area just outside London, also has many individual shops which are very popular. Llandudno - has many individual shops, again a very busy shopping area. These private enterprises do not include a mass of coffee shops and barbers either!
If Southport is to attract people to the town, then it requires someone in Town Planning to grasp the fact that markets are changing. It also needs them to realise that the majority of people use private transport to reach the town. So the intelligent solution would be to do away with parking charges, create parking areas and encourage private enterprise into the town. As everyone keeps telling them! Unfortunately, the public sector are not known for marketing skills.

Town Planning don't create the rules and have very little leeway in intererting them, the Government set the guidelines and if the Council don't adhere to them they end up in very costly appeal proceedures such as the opposition to the the new Sainsburys store.

Local councils do take an active part in Planning for the local area. For any development each council has to approve all planned developments.e.g Llandudno Council refuse any planning permission for new development that does not conform with the existing historical character of the town.
