Stolen Bike from Costa on Liverpool Road

Imo you're the one who should re-read the original post......because it states bike was stolen from Costa on Liverpool Rd - and not from a gym. Therefore, a spare low-cost expendable bike for visiting places like Costa makes perfect sense. Many people run a second (or even a third) bike, myself included.

So the young man on his way to the gym fancies a coffee, does he have to go to Costa on his low cost bike then ride home to get his good bike to go to the gym, alternatively on his way home he fancies a coffee is he expected to ride home to get his cheap bike.

Move on a few years, does he have to have two cars in your scenario?

Each to his own....If you need go everywhere on an attractive and expensive machine, sooner or later it will draw unwanted attention. Btw, while in a bike shop today, I witnessed a guy buying a new bike. Having mentioned the recent spate of thefts to him, he replied he would be securing it by using the hefty padlock and chain off his motorbike!
