    Southport Hospital 'Scandal'.

A local rag is carrying a story about a former nurse complaining about his treatment for a bad back at Southport Hospital because he had to wait 4 hours to be seen and then had to wait on a trolley in a corridor in a queue for a cubicle to become available. Surely he, more than anybody else should know what pressure the NHS is under at the moment.

Recently one of my elderly parents was admitted through A&E and ended up in Critical Care after spending 15 hours in A&E Resus.
Am I complaining, not in the slightest the care received was of the highest standard, my only complaint is about the tremendous pressure on the service and particularly the staff, I just don't know how they cope with this hour after hour, day after day.

SDH has just received a great report on the care it provides. The people who deliver that care are special.

    Bad Lifestyle Choices

I'm sure the staff do their best in what is a difficult situation with overstretched rescources. However, dealing with complaints resulting from overeating and/or underexercising, accounts for a significant portion of the NHS workload nowadays.....If only people would take more responsibility for their own wellbeing, NHS waiting lists and bed occupancy would be much reduced.

I think you're making assumptions here that does not reflect reality. I was hospitalised twice this time last year with norovirus. the patients in the wards that I saw weren't particularly obese but nearly all were elderly and reflect the usual winter pattern of many years in our hospitals.
We are living longer and this should be planned for by the Dept of Health yet in the last 5-year plan, an extra £30billion was identified as being needed to keep levels of services adequate but it was claimed that £22billion of "efficiencies" could be made leaving just £8billion to be found.
Someone said this week that "You cant have Scandinavian levels of services with USA levels of taxation". Sums it up perfectly imho.

The nhs is fantastic in emergency care.

Below that the service has less priority due to the volume of footfall and free at the point of delivery access to treatment.

Yes it is an assumption, as I don't have the figures to hand. But would not be surprised if around 30% of the NHS workload is lifestyle-related. Remove that group from the system, there would be more than enough resources to offer the highest quality of care to elderly/accident victims etc.

As I have mentioned ad nauseum on the forum, it is evident to anyone who has stayed in hospital that many of the hospital staff aren't motivated enough by what they see daily to keep their weight down, so little chance for the rest of us to change our ways.

Perhaps central Govt should do more to incentivise people. E.g. introduce a 'sugar tax', raise price of alcohol, raise fuel duty to discourage unnecessary car usage, have more healthy eating campaigns. Above all, Instruct G.P.'s to prescribe meaningful daily exercise to all comers.

The fault does not lie with hospital medical staff, they can only do so much given the conditions they find themselves forced to work under. The NHS has been losing money since 2012, prior to that it was breaking even. The corrective approach is an attempt to streamline the service so that losses do not occur - in preference to the alternative of continuing to keep throwing money into it because this would only lead to an escalation of the underlying problems. The arguments put forward relate to an increase in population in the UK. This does not make sense because numbers of hospital staff and buildings have increased also. What has changed drastically is the number of administration staff employed now in the NHS, and the fact that private enterprise has taken over many departments. Streamlining needs to be severe in the administration area, lesser used departments need to combine, administration staff including management should all be medically trained to double up in emergencies and the staff should be reduced considerably, privatisation should be phased out, hospitals should combine to create the optimum purchasing power, management power should be only given to a supervisory board not to single individuals to reduce the lack of transparency over funding. It can be done but money and cronyism would block any realistic attempts.

A fact that somewhat surprised me was... Treating obesity and smoking is cheaper than keeping folks fit.

This report claims that the obese cost the economy more when they are alive but because they die earlier they avoid expensive round the clock care later in life.

I understand that some people may have more difficulty keeping thin genetically, but that is no excuse for letting yourself go.
Orwell said "If there is hope, it lies in the proles." Whilst champagne socialists see diversity idealised at university, the common folk experience it first hand in their neighbour hoods.
