Unfortunately I was one of the other poor sods who attended this school.
I was there from about 1965 to 1970. (I'm 49 now)
Can't remember any good bits about it!

Firstly, I did NOT attend Greenbank High School!
But my daughter did, and the following tale makes me wonder how many pupils were put off a subject for life because of a crettin of a teacher.
Parents Evening for the Options Year came up, and my daughter collected the appointments, and if memory serves me correctly you would be allocated two five minute slots, then a five minute breather - then two five minute slots ... throughout the evening.
Guess which important teacher was running about seven or eight minutes late - Maths. Following them I had the Physics Teacher, and I have forgotten her name.
Arrived at the Physics Teachers desk, to which she arrogantly said 'You are four minutes late,.....'
I replied 'If your Maths teacher had got their sums right, I would have been on time'.
When I got home I asked my daughter if she was thinking of dropping Physics --- YES!

I went to The GHS.
Mrs Edwards (Geography), Miss Worthington, Miss Barney (P.E.), Miss Ezard (Headmistress), Miss Brown (Spanish) plus loads of others.... will have to think!

I was at SHS from 1950 - 57 and thought it was wonderful.
Miss Ezard was Head and other teachers included Miss Twiss (for French) whom I adored - also Mme Danson, Mrs Mansfield and Miss Garnett.
There was Miss Murdoch who terrified me but got me through
A' level Maths - (I had to work hard as I was the only one of my year group doing it although in the second year another girl who had stayed on for a 3rd year joined me.)
Other Maths teachers were Miss Southern, Miss Cheetham and Mrs Whiteman then just as I was leaving Nora Melling (who had been a Head Girl) came back to join the dept.
Deaf Miss Finch took us for Science - well for A' level Chemistry and General Science up to O'level.
Miss Wareing and Miss Hoult took History, Mrs Wormald and Mrs Edwards (who died a couple of years ago) taught Geography, Miss Harrison and Miss Rodgers - Art, Mrs Bennett Mrs Round and Miss Hosker - Biology.
Games teachers were Miss Wilmott, Miss Ramsden, Miss Jolly and Miss Barney. We had quite a walk to the games field and I have no ides now where it was - probably houses or flats now - as are both the school buildings of course.
Miss Ezard retired a year or two after I left and Greenbank opened, the head being Miss Evans I think.
Latin was taught by Miss Wells and Miss Mallinson who wore falsies. She used to lean on her desk and one day it fell off the dais - so did she and "they" slipped - one went waistwards the other towards her shoulder. For ages at playtime you could hear the chant:
"Mallibus sittibus at the deskororum
Deskibus collapsibus
Malli on the floorum."
Miss Schofield taught English and Miss Kennedy too I think - she was in charge of the first 2 years when we were housed where Vernon Court is now on Scarisbrick New Road. After 2 years we went up to the main building on the corner of Sc New Rd and Sefton Street.
Dozy Dora (Miss Hoult - forget her married name) also took R.E. There was a Miss Morgan who came to teach English around 1953/4 replacing Miss Hicks.
Philomena Brown arrived around the same time to introduce Spanish into the curriculum and Miss Willliams taught music and wrote a school song which was incredibly difficult to sing.
Miss Alexander and Miss Edge did Dom Sci - Miss A - needlework, Miss E - cookery. She was replaced later by Ceciley somebody whose name I can't remember as I didn't do Dom Sci higher up school.
I was very happy at school and look back with fond memories. My year group have had several reunions in the past few years -the next one being Friday 6th November 2009

Don't think I knew a Miss Worthington, Pedoja but I remember the others you mentioned so I might have forgotten her. What did she teach - and was it between 1950 and 1957?

I have just remembered, the Dom Sci teacher was Cecily Gambrill, Miss Patterson taught Physics and Maths, Miss Shanley, Music (she was a flautist) and Miss Cheetham became Mrs Pennington. There was an older music teacher too who came part time and used to teach at St Wyburn's and also at Wigan Girls' High - where I taught for a couple of years. Her name was Phyllis but I can't recall her surname.

Ms Leach
I appreciate this is an old thread, but I've been trying for years to track down my Spanish teacher, Marie/Maria Leech/Leach. I attended between 1977-1982.
I've done the friends reunited search, facebook etc and can find no trace of her. I believe she may have gone to live in Spain??
Does anyone else remember her or know of her whereabouts?
seize the day, we only live life once and there's a lot of chocolate out there that needs eating

Anyone still out there following this? I had a sudden notion today to find out about Miss Costello. I was at the Highschool from 1958 to 1965 (Pamela Crimmins) and Miss Costello described me to my mother as "the black sheep of the class". She obviously thought I disrupted her lessons. How ironic that years later I have been learning Latin with U3A and to my great delight we have just started ancient Greek. What a shame that is was never possible to share my enthusiasm with Miss Costello although I remember than sixthformers said she was quite a different teacher for A-Levels.
