News Saturday Night Takeaway, Applause for McPartlin at finale

Whats is the world coming too when people clap a bloke who is being done for drink driving?

Declan Donnelly called for a round of applause for Ant McPartlin after hosting the last in the series of Saturday Night Takeaway alone.

He took charge of the live episode from Florida without his co-presenter, who stepped down from work commitments following a drink-driving charge.

Donnelly presented the ITV show without McPartlin for the first time last week.

After the variety show went off air, he told the audience the shows had been "fun" but "tinged with sadness".

He asked them to applaud McPartlin, saying he "is back at home" and would "appreciate that".

He had signed off the programme filmed at the Universal Orlando Resort by thanking fans for "all the love and support during the series".

McPartlin is to appear in court this month after being arrested following a collision with two other cars while he was driving his Mini in south-west London, on March 18.

Flying's not given. I've complete sympathy for people with mental health and alcohol problems - until they put others at risk. Especially ones who are wealthy enough to afford a taxi or a driver.

And British people actually pay the idiot's wages! He should never have been employed in the entertainment sector - he is anything but entertaining!

I also can’t stand either of them and now the dreadful Britain’s got Talent is returning next Saturday. Saturday must be the worst night on television.

Quite appalling. It seems there are two sets of standards and morals for a lot of people. One if you are a regular person, subject to the laws of the land. Another if you are a celebrity, who receive outpourings of love and support, regardless of the offence.

The posts on Facebook, mainly by middle aged and older women (though not exclusively) trilling on about how 'he needs support' or 'give him a chance' was vomit-inducing. If their child / grandchild had been in a car hit by a drunk driver, they'd be baying for blood. But not 'poor Ant'. Thank God Jimmy Savile wasn't younger or better looking. Because 'Saturday nights wouldn't be the same without him'. Sad deluded *****es.

I've every sympathy for anyone fighting an addiction and facing their own demons. But driving a car whilst twice over the limit is a choice. Pure and simple. They should make an example of him.
