    Saly Army

Wouldn't it be better if the large Saly Army building in Shakespeare street opened it's doors this winter to homless people. It could advertise the fact and ask the public to donate food, clothing, bedding, money etc. This would centralise things and be truly worthwhile.

Same could be said about the 2 empty floors of BHS, or the empty Homebase unit.

Homebase has toilet facilities, showers and a large canteen it could easily be fitted out with camp beds, not quite so central but it would be a point to head for.

Great idea. There must be a better way than the current system.

There are now measures in place for the homeless sleepers at Leyland Road and the Eco Centre. However, I can never understand why there is a demand for warm clothing when certainly the Salvation Army (and lots of other charity shops) have masses of the stuff just sitting on hangers, the majority of which is later sold as 'cash for clothes' because they can't get rid of it.

I m surprised that so many of the contrbutors to this forum who get very upset about trivial matters have nothing to add about the homeless. I mentioned the Large Saly Army building as a potential winter refuge as I believe it cost well over a million pounds to build...where did the money come from to build it? At least they should open the doors to the homeless as winter sets it.

I have been inside the building and thought to myself why don't they use all this space to house the homeless for the winter. I would be interested to find out what the accommadation is actually used for...just interested.

You could say that about any churches or religious buildings and I recall the YMCA housed the homeless during the winter months some years back.

A good point Melanie. So what is happening this winter? Bearing in mind that the homless people issue has been high on the political agenda.

The last time I questioned the Salvation Army and how much goes to where it should go, I got shot down by one of its members. I mean, where do the uniforms and the brass instruments come from? How much does that all cost? Now it's all hoodies and looking 'down with the kids' to try and get donations.

Do the Salvation Army recruit gay people or help gay people? Valid question for anyone from the SA looking in.

Does The Salvation Army serve the LGBTQ Community?

Yes. Any person who walks through our doors will receive assistance based on their need and our capacity to help. Our mission is to the preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and meet human need in His name without discrimination.

Does The Salvation Army provide shelter to transgender people?

Yes. When a transgender person seeks help from us, we serve them in the same manner as any other person seeking assistance. Too often, LGBTQ Americans experience unacceptable homophobia or transphobia when seeking shelter. The Salvation Army seeks to be a welcome, safe place for all men, women, and children.

Does The Salvation Army consider the sexual orientation or gender identity of an applicant in its hiring practices?

No. We embrace talented people regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity. Our hiring practices are open to all.

Does The Salvation Army provide benefits to the spouses of employees in same-sex marriages?

Yes. We provide the same benefits to opposite-sex and same-sex couples.

    Is it?

If it was high on the political agenda they would actually be trying to do something about. It seems to me as far Politicians go it is just a hand wringing exercise and a Christmas Photo Opportunity.

Firstly the Salvation Army is a church like any other church and the Charity is an off shoot of the church whose aim is to help anyone in need where possible. Over 100 families in need received gifts at Christmas and over 1,000 new gifts were wrapped by volunteers and distributed in Southport.
The building was paid for by savings over thirty years and cost 3 million pounds. Nothing came from charity shop or donations.
There are homeless shelters at St Helens and Liverpool and the church supply them with clothes and toiletries.
The food kitchen is helped where possible with soup etc as is the Food Bank.
The church building is just that a Worship Hall or Citadel and a cafe was thought a good idea for the local community to meet. Coffee and soup is given to the very needy. All run by volunteers and mainly at cost price.
Rooms are let out fairly cheaply to organisations such as Alcohol help groups.
Other times rooms are used for Knit and Natter, Sewing, Line Dance groups etc
So please stop writing things that are fabricated.

No connection with the Salvation Army, but I do support them with donations to the shop as I feel they are one of the few truly unbiased assistance groups around, all the negative stuff on here are just the usual deflection tactics seeking to pass responsibility from government to someone else.

Frankly how and what they do is their decision and those who somehow feel that whatever they spend is open to public debate are missing a few points, the main one being that of course they are not funded by public money, if you support the Salvation Army, ask the question, if not keep your nose out, unless of course laws are broken.
