Relocation to Southport.
Hi everyone
My family and i will be relocating to Southport very soon and i was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to give me a few pointers as to which, if any, areas to avoid with regards to buying a house? I have driven around and Kew and Marshside areas seemed nice.
Also, i have been told by many people that Southport is a very nice place to live. I will guess that Southport will have its problems just like every where else but is it generally a great place to be?
We are all looking forward to moving there.

Southport is a very nice place to live , like all areas in U.K. It is suffering from a lack of investment .
The areas you mention are nice areas . May I ask where you are relocating from .

Tricky question to answer honestly as other posters here quite rightly would be offended if you perhaps mentioned certain areas weren't very desirable.
Not to pry too much but do you have a budget range and property size you are ideally looking for.

You have to be careful around Kew as some areas have or are still suffering from subsidence. I would avoid the new estate they are building as they are already making a mess of it. The older estate opposite the hospital is quite a decent area to live and the houses are built better !
Also the area around High Park Road and Russel Road isn't great - there is a lot of trouble up that way. And also around Bedford Park as you get a lot of kids hanging around the park as well as it being a regular spot for drugs users.
Marshside and Crossens are nice areas but again some roads are better than others. You might also want to consider Birkdale too as there are some nice houses in that area and the village is great for evenings out. It is much preferred to town. Birkdale is also handy for a lot of the local schools.

All above is good accurate advice.....but why strictly restrict a search to within the town boundary? Here in West Lancs, we are still literally 10mins from Southport town centre, yet enjoy big skies and open views right across to the fells.
Consider taking a Sunday drive around the towns neighbouring parishes of Banks, Scarisbrick and Halsall, before ruling that option out. You may be surprised to hear house prices for a place in the country compare well with those in town. E.g. character 2-bed semis located on a quiet lane, with a third of an acre plot, can be picked up for as little as £190k.....A near neighbour had a pre-sale valuation of that figure in Jan and will be selling this Spring. I would be happy to put you in touch with her if it's of any interest.

Southport is a fabulous place to live.
So much clean fresh air parks and open spaces.
Schools and access to the motorway may define your choice.
I would avoid an abode to close to Pontin's Holiday Camp
and a farm with a herd but then I would do that in my present local town.

I think Ruler1 got it spot on when he said an area 'isn't great' - that's about as bad as it gets in Southport. With it being a small town you're never that far away from a council road or a half £M property. Formby 5 miles down the coast is lovely but pricey. As for Southport I would base your move on what is important to your family - ofsted school reports, motorway access, shopping etc. Good Luck with your move.

If you are coming from the South, believe me, only the better side of Birkdale will do. Proper village area with independent fishmongers, butchers and cheese shop. Nice wine bars which keep the w*****s out. You need to live south of Liverpool Rd. The best is south of the railway line, but cheaper smaller properties are available just north of the railway line. Churchtown is also nice and has a similar feel, but abuts the worst area in Southport.

If I had a choice of living in either Marshside or Kew I'd pick Marshside, even if it does get windier up there.

Welcome to Southport.
Advice is best given by the estate agents staff . Ask them were they live. If you have children then schools are very important.
I hope your move goes well.

Surely people "living" in an area are the best judges, and , a friend of mine works for an estate agent in Southport and she lives in not a solubrious area .
Stick to sleeping .
