How MANY European Railways were making a profit before those Tories once again kicked the Railway in the Family Jewels by privatisation and allowing French/German/Dutch State railways to subsidise THEIR fares whilst ours are paying through the nose to use the trains and income tax to pay subsidies to
these PRIVATE companies. To any one else but a TORY that would be heresy.
What I can't for the life of me understand is supposedly sensible people can argue FOR the failures of Tory Government. Just because Eton/Oxbridge is in their Who's Who entry doesn't mean they have brains outside of their wallets.
In South Wales from 1948 the Tories closed 108 pits and Labour closed 68. On top of this in the Labour controlled era in the 1970's the only pits that closed were with the consent of the NUM Lodges of that particular pit. They had no choice under the Tories.
Men leaving for easier jobs closed many a mine in the 1960's.
On a National basis the Sunday Mirror blew that myth to pieces, the Tories shut 597 pits and Labour 345. Under the Tories 458,000 jobs were lost, with labour 235,000.
Sorry old bean I used the wrong post of yours to reply to earlier point you made.
Still stands just not in the right order.

Perhaps it is worth noting that St Ives has virtually no parking anywhere near the town and it is all expensive parking. Wells next the sea is another, similar, favourite of mine. They are both borderline inaccessible. It is about identifying a market and following it.

I am not sure about the 'aimed at the working class' resorts.
The people who want to stay in seaside resorts hols by choice are the
singles/ bereaved and none drivers of any wealth.
Resorts attracting the other profitable market-hen and stag nights etc
do not attract the conservative visitors for more than daytrips.
Blackpool and other seaside resorts have an added disadvantage.
With plenty of small occupant rentable plus seasonal work only they are a magnet for have nots and a depository for the have nothing at alls
overspill from prosperous satellite towns.
Bury being an example.
Look at the crime statistics in Blackpool.
I am sure that I read somewhere Blackpool is offering free Christmas parking this year.

Really - have you ever been to any of the more upmarket seaside resorts in the UK ?
Why would singles and those who have bereaved want to go on a UK holiday in a resort that has virtually no suitable accommodation or entertainment for either. Good luck to you if you want to go to Cornish or Norfolk resorts without a car - even if you have to pay a fortune to park it miles away.

Ormskirk (cut off from Southport by rail since the '60's by the Burscough curve) has a parking offer in place right up to Xmas....Pay for 1 hour and get 2 extra hours free, i.e. your 1 hour ticket is valid for 3 hours, as I happily discovered yesterday.

That does not mean upmarket resorts-yes I have been to upmarket resorts with upmarket hotels.
There is lots of accommodation for singles and the elderly and those without transport capitalised on by coach trips who block book hotels.

On the way there or back?
There's a big difference, On the way there is enthusiasm, on the way back could indicate that Blackpool had so much to off that they were too busy!
