True, and I have never particularly been an advocate for a free airshow at Southport. It either pays its way or don't do it.

Essex is about five times bigger than Sefton, and sponsorship and other commercial revenue mean that the cost is about 3p per resident. They estimate the commercial benefit of the airshow to be around 5m. I think it helps that Clacton is the poor bit of a very rich county, whereas Southport is actually the one of the wealthier bits of what overall is a fairly deprived metropolitan borough. It is a similar dynamic for Blackpool, which is a poor bit of a large and, by northern standards, wealthy county.
